Ok.. to keep it short the answer is no for using an analog 56k modem to connect to AOL via a Vonage connection. AOL couldn't dialup to get the local access numbers.. Nor could I connect using the AOL 800 pay/min access number.

Just to make sure that I could dial out I used hyperterminal to give my cell phone a call.. it worked.

Next.. FAX

More bad news..

Winfax Pro can connect to a fax machine but the system can't decide on a speed at which to send the fax so.. the fax doesn't send.

"Unable to negotiate connection or train on last attempt" - is the message in the Winfax pro log.

So.. to wrap it up.. using a 56k analog modem over a Vonage line.

Hyperterminal will dial out over a Vonage connection.

AOL can't connect (probabaly the speed negotiation issue).

Fax will connect but it won't send because of the speed negotiation issue.

Next.. change modem to a 33.6 and see if that makes a difference..

Good news.. Using an old 33.6 modem..

I was able to send a fax over my Vonage line..

The system thrashed around for a while trying to settle on a speed.. then at 2400 baud it settled down and sent a 2 page fax.

UPDATE -

I got the 56 k modem working with fax by setting the "Initialize at" to 2400 bps and it works every time.

So.. looks like fax will work OK on Vonage.

well ive tried the same trying to connect to an earthlink and another local isp. i can dial out just fine, but the modem seems to get hung up in the handshaking mode and tries and tries till it times out and drops the connection...

im going to have to start tweaking settings, someone suggested doig the *99 then dumbing down the bps in the init string to 9600 so maybe thatll do something.

I too have been trying to connect to my ISP over Vonage... mixed results that seem to always end up in a droped call. As for faxing, I have that preaty much fixed. I used a DSL Filter connected to my Fax modem backwards [male end into fax modem] then connected the phone line to my TA.

Then I got to thinking.. maybe if I connect my laptop modem to the FAx modem and dial...

Just tried it... no good..

SO if you need to fax reliably, try adding a DSL Filter reveresed and it should improve your faxing.. it did for me anyway... Very Happy

I have heard rumors that if Vonage upgrades to the t.38 standard it will help with modem connections. But I have yet to hear when they plan to do this upgrade. It also is supposed to help with faxing.
