I have had a very trying period of over a month in trying to get my phone number ported out from Vonage to a new provider I am changing to. Vonage has had my phone service for 1 1/2 years; but I had the phone number since 1977. They have delayed giving my phone number up; and have given me and my new provider a lot of double talk in the numerous phone calls and emails to Vonage about this. They kept saying there was an information mismatch, when there wasnt; or they would say that my new provider needed to request the port out, which had been done over and over again. Yesterday, I was told by my new carrier that Vonage has finally released my phone number to them, and my new service installation should be done on April 13; I will follow up and advise if there are more problems. I am porting my number out because of the numerous service problems that started arising in the past few months. Freeda |

I have requested that my main Vonage number be ported out to another provider. I'd like to keep the rest of my Vonage numbers with Vonage. What will happen to my fax, softphone and virtual numbers when the main number gets ported out? Will Vonage simply replace the main with a temporary number, or do I need to call them to convert my fax into the main number? If I need to call them, should it be before or after the LNP transfer actually happens? |

..Yes you can, just make sure you don't cancel your account while the number transfer is not yet complete.. |

Yes, you may convert your fax line to a voice line so it could be the main line on the account. You could have it even with a basic plan if you wont be needing the Unlimited plan with Vonage since you have another phone line (the one you ported out to a different provider)
Make sure though you only call Vonage after the port has been completed NOT during or when transfer has not ACTUALLY happen...yet.

I successfully ported out of Vonage. I used to have two lines, a main line and a fax line.
One carrier tried for a while and couldn't port the main line, about a year later another carrier did it without too much trouble.
The interesting thing is once the port goes through, Vonage doesn't automatically update their database. Thus if a Vonage customer calles the line it goes to my Vonage box, but if anybody else calls it goes to the new carrier.
So you have to then cancel the line you ported, they can reshuffle the lines so you keep whichever one remains as your primary (as long as its not a softphone line).
When cancelling make sure you tell them that you have ported the number out and they need to remove the number from their database. If the rep doesn't know what this means tell them they need to submit a level 2/3 ticket called "Remove DID from Database".
When I cancelled the main line they didn't, so the number was assigned to another Vonage user a few days later. Result being that Vonage users who call the number get that guy, everybody else gets me.
Fortunately it got worked out- they got the other guy another number (he had wondered why his phone didn't work) and I am now working with two carriers (vonage still has my fax line).
So in the end it is quite possible, just may depend on where you are porting it to. |

I can verify this. We have transfered 3 lines over from Vonage to another provider, and on all 3 of them we had to call them up and get them to manually remove the line from their database. It takes a bit of work to convince them that the line has already been transfered, but eventually they will put you on hold, talk to their supervisor, and then they will enter your phone number into a special tool to remove it from the Vonage database. Oh, and if your initial contract isn't up yet, expect to pay $80 per line when you close the account. We were about 6 months shy of the end of a 2 year contract for 2 lines, and it cost $160 to close the account. |
