We have a business account with two lines + fax. The network is setup as cableModem -> RTP300 (line 1 + fax, router ports have second adapter (Motorola) for line 2, network storage drive, and a switch with 1 pc & 2 network printers.

Calls in to line 1 (on RTP300) that are transferred to line 2 (Motorola plugged into RTP300) come through to line 2 with lots of static - kind of a high-pitched whine in the background. But only transferred calls.

Vonage support tried a few things yesterday, like putting both voice lines through the RTP300 (assuming the QoS abilities on the RTP300 aren't adequate to give the Motorola enough bandwidth), but that made things worse - all incoming calls were static-y, although hanging up and dialing out gave a clear call (I saw other posts reporting this, but with no real solutions).

With things getting worse, Vonage put everything back to the original setup. Still had some problems with incoming calls to line 2, but now it's more sporadic.

We've bumped up our cable service (was 500/256, now 1mb/500), but today the transfer was still static-y. Was considering getting a router (Linksys 54g?) to put in front of both of the adapters and using QoS on the router to give priority to the adapters and low prioritiy to the other devices, as it seems that only the transfers to line 2, on the Motorola behind the RTP300.

Does this sound like a good idea to try? Any other suggestions?

I'd say so. However, before you go to the expense, I'd do a speed test on your service and verify that you're getting what you're paying for. Also, a test call at www.testyourvoip.com would seem to be in order.

I assume that calls are transferred to line 2 when line 1 is busy. Is this correct? If so, the fact that the problem only occurs with transferred calls suggests that you're just not getting enough bandwidth from you ISP. Reducing the bandwidth settings on all lines might help.

The bandwidth saver setting was dropped down to medium (50) on both lines last night and today's transfer still had static.

The type of transfer we're doing is manual, from one line to the other.

Speed tests showed about 200 upload speed vs. 250 claimed. I haven't been back to the office to test the new upgraded speeds.

Today the incoming calls haven't shown any problems but the transfer is still poor. Still thinking about getting a router as the RTP seems to be impacting download speeds. Will post any results.

That's interesting. How do you effect a transfer from one line to another?

Sounds like a good system. But to get back to your problem, you only get static on line 2, and then only when the call has been transferred from line 1? There's no problem if two conversations are going on simultaneously on lines 1 and 2, as long as no transfer is involved? That really is odd.

Did you get to do the speed test with the new service upgrade?
