My question is whether or not I should replace the adapter with a different router and just get the PAP2, or if it just an ISP issue. I've had Time Warner digital phone with 0 problems, and switched to Vonage for the price. However, in the 6 + months I've had it, it's been nothing but problems. I've replaced the modem, my phones (now have new 5.8 GHZ cordless). I'd like to keep the service, but I use my cell phone more often just for fear of dropping the call on Vonage.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Your problem is all that burst loss on the Internet connection. I suppose one thing to check before blaming the ISP is your cable modem's signal levels:

http://192.168.100.1/

What sort of values are shown there?

Thanks for the quick response. Below are the values from the 'Signal' page.

Downstream:
Frequency: 609000000 Hz
Signal to Noise Ratio: 38.9 db
Power Level: 4.5dBmV

Upstream:
Channel ID: 3
Frequency: 33008000 Hz
Power: 39.0 dBmV

No problem at all with those signal levels, so it's probably your ISP's fault. Instead of giving you one packet every 20ms, they're giving you (roughly) 5 packets every 100ms, which leads to choppy voice.

So, they're not actually losing packets, they're just throwing them at you in chunks...

Does anyone know what sort of settings a Vonage rep is able to tweak? It seems like stuff like this could be fixed by increasing the size of the jitter buffer. That would fix the choppiness by waiting a longer time for packets to arrive, although it would add more delay to the voice.

Ryanc2,

You have a huge number of packet discards. If you temporarily remove the Vonage adapter from your setup and do the test call again, does the situation improve?

You still have a huge number of packet discards. I think it's time for a call to Time Warner.

Thanks for all the replies...

What should I tell Time Warner? They have been out and tested the lines from the street to my house and to the modem as well as the modem itself and say I have no problems.

I can only imagine the repsonse I'll get from a CSR when I call and tell them I have packet disgards - "You threw away your welcome packet? Ok, we'll send you out a new one."

Isnt there any other service provider such as FiOS fiber to the home available there?

Unfortunately no FiOS, only Time Warner, Bellsouth DSL, or Satellite.
