The White noise issues is a problem with the .58 firmware. The temp fix now is to pick up the phone on the second ring. It won't be there. They are already working on a new firmware and it's almost done. Not etr on release date though.

I just set up with Vonage yesterday, using a Linksys PAP2 (3.1.6) and seem to have this "white noise" problem.

It only happens when I call certain numbers, but always happens on these numbers. Other numbers are nice & clear. I brought the little PAP2 to work today and plugged in to the different ISP here and have the same problem.

I haven't followed up with moving my phone number over to Vonage, luckily. I'm probably going to end up sticking with Voip we have through our cable company, which is crystal clear. I was just sick of giving them so much money each month.

Oh well.

I also have noticed the white noise for 1 in 3 calls since the release of firmware 1.00.58. The calls were clear with 1.00.55. Because I use the phones for a business I can't wait weeks for another firmware release to fix the problem. My suggestion (besides fixing the problem) is for Vonage to let users decide what firmware they use instead of mandatory pushes.

I've just made it a habit to wait until the Caller ID appears before answering. I think the caller ID data is the key - once that appears, the call connects cleanly. If you answer before the caller ID data appears, though, it's "dixie cup and string" time. The static is so horrid you can just barely hear the other end if they shout, and vice versa. I don't know if some event that completes the connection was tied to Caller ID, or what, but it's a strange one.

I seriously have to wonder what kind of QA that firmware release was subjected to. Yes, it DID fix caller ID for a lot of people. Yes, if given the choice I WOULD have volunteered to have that firmware update even with this issue (though it would have been nice to be told about the issue). Regardless, it still rather amazes me that such an obvious bug got through QA.

Maybe the testers were focusing on the fixes to Caller ID and forgot to do a test for people who answer on the first ring? Wink
