Hi,

I need to increase the wireless signal of my WRTP54G. Has anyone had success extending the signal range by using the Linksys WRE54G range extender? If anyone has been able to incease the signal strength by other means, please comment on how you were able to achieve this. Thnx.

In case anyone else was trying to extend the wireless range of their WRTP54G, I found the Netgear product - WGXB102 wireless range extender kit to work perfectly for my situation.

The kit consists of two wall plugged mounts - one the XE102 is connected by ethernet to your router and then plugged directly into a wall power socket near your router. The second unit - WGX102 should be plugged directly into a wall power socket anywhere in your home where your wireless signal is weak. The second unit acts as an AP (Access Point) by default. I can now use my laptop anywhere in the house with an excellent signal.

I hope this post is helpful to someone else wanting to extend the range of their wireless signal.

Have you tried the Pringles can? I once heard it works so good the cops were actually trying to make it illegal.

The Pringles can DOES work, very well in fact. For a cleaner solution, I'd go with the Linksys Long range Antenna kit. I have one with my WRT and works very well. As for the WRE, I have one used that I don't use anymore, I'll let you have it for $35+shipping if you want. Just send me a PM.

Dave

You guys are kidding about the Pringles can, right?

I was told by Linksys that their long range antenna kits were not compatible with the WRTP54G.

Thnx navydavy for the offer, but I'll stick with what I got now that works perfectly.

I use a Cisco Aironet Omnidirectional Mast Mount Antenna (AIR-ANT2506)

It works great.

Alright, I see now that you were not pulling my leg. Interesting bit of engineering there to say the least.

If you are OK with the signal being directional, there is an easier way that doesn't involve eating a can of Pringles and can be installed on your existing antennas. Oh, and the parts list is limited to heavy paper and some tin foil, and maybe a little adhesive tape if you like...

http://www.freeantennas.com/

Comes in two flavors, parabolic...

and corner...

This does not improve signal STRENGTH per se, but if you are looking to go in a particular direction, it can improve range considerably in that direction.

The site contains templates that you cut out, cover one bit with tinfoil or mylar, fold in the indicated places, insert tab A into slot B, etc.

If they don't work, then you're out a few square feet of tin foil and some construction paper. Wink

Probably even a fun project for the whole family if you have kids. And they don't get fat from eating Pringles. (grin)
