Also speed isn't so important. You can have a 16 megabit pipe both up and down with 30% PL and Voip will suck. Its more about the quality of the line and not really the speed as long as its basic broadband speed..

Are you saying that when I try to move back to my landline, that my landline company may not be able to get my current phone number back from Vonage? In other words, did I just lose my landline number to try this 4-month experiment with Vonage?

I am not saying you lost it. I am saying they are not obligated to port it. I just lost my number from my previous Voip provider for this reason.

I agree- I am forced now to get rid of Vonage. Up until a few months ago ( I've had the service for a Year) I loved it. I told lots of people about it and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Now I have all kinds of problems with "lines being temp busy" and delay for callers calling me. I am very upset because I am looking for a new job- and the phone number is on my Resume that I have out there.

I have zero confidence in Tech support- they seem to have no clear idea what the problem is and each time I call I get the standard answer- "We know we are working on it" etc. Not true.

I think the idea of Voip is great - so I will try another vendor. My take is that Vonage is all about Marketing and selling it's products, to gain market share before others get in the market- BUT is totally out of control in terms of the type of technical service it offers. I don't think it has the technical staff or systems to handle what it is selling.

According to the 5th message in this thread, Vonage will port your number back to any carrier that provides services in your rate center.

I read that to mean that you must wait until the new carrier confirms your number has been ported before you cancel the Vonage account

This is *VERY* true. Vonage *can* work over a dial-up modem if you know what you're doing, without choppiness/etc. Unfortunately, due to the packeted/synchronous nature of real-time voice communication, it'll be the first application to exhibit problems caused by a poor quality connection, while asynchronous (web browsing) apps will appear to be fine. People, being people, will blame the symptom rather than the cause.

Hi gang,

Here's the follow-up to my situation: Vonage gave me 1 free month to "give them another chance", so that's what I'm doing right now.

I actually have only received ONE blank voicemail since giving them another chance, and only two voicemails have come in choppy, so it seems like the situation is improving somewhat.

I will keep you all posted.

Thanks,
Scott

Again I would like to state that I have been with Vonage for about a month now and have not experienced any problems that have affected me at all that many people talk about on this board.

So I want to counter this persons negative remark by telling people that it works for me and you only hear from the people who complain. Just because one person has a problem doesn't mean that there arn't 50 people who are not having problems.

It's very rare since I've been a customer that I've seen someone say in this forum, "gee Vonage is great." That's because people don't speak up when they have nothing to complain about.

Gee, Vonage is great.

No serious problems to date, besides little things like voicemail indications when there is no voicemail, that doesn't bother me. I love it, it works, and it's cheap.

Of course you're going to see mainly people posting with problems in this forum. It wouldn't be much of "An Independent Support Site" if we all sat around talking about how great the service is. The person who's having a problem doesn't give a hoot if 50 other people aren't having the same problem and neither should the potential customer care. How does that help them? People need to be aware of the potential issues before they sign up for service, and this is an excellent source for that. Obviously lots of people think the service is good and the price is right or Vonage wouldn't have 1,000,000+ subscribers. Good grief...we've got people lamenting that everyone should research the service before they take the plunge and then other people saying you shouldn't always be posting problems all the time in a support forum.
