I have a small home office, 1 computer, 1 cable modem, 1 phone line. I was on the verge of ordering Vonage, but now I'm scared. All this talk of ATA, POTS, LMP, PTSN, MOTO; what does it all mean? And in front of or behind router. And changing computer settings. And configuring this and that.

I was of the impression that if one only had 1 computer, router was not needed; that all I had to do was connect the Vonage device to the cable modem and plug in a phone and start making calls.

And another thing, I've been trying to do the speed test, but when I click on the link, I only get a gray box with the words "java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: udTestClientMain.Class!!!

Help unconfused me please?!

You ae correct, all you need to do is to plug the adapter into your cable modem, plug your computer into phone adapter and phone line into adapter you are good to go. The other stuff is for people who have more than one computer and for those of us who like to fix things even though they ain't broke. (but they eventually get that way)

As far as java script error, it sounds like you do not have the jave plug in installed on your computer. Just go to the Sun Microsystems website and download the plug in. (free of charge). I believe the address is www.java.sun.com but not entirely sure.

have fun

What a relief! I was absolutely terrified after reading all this stuff. Guess I should have stayed in the shallow end.

Thank you for providing the java link. I'll check that out first so that I can check my up/download speed.

Thank you so much.

I was scared too. I plugged my MTA (Motorola Telephone Adapter) into my Cable Modem and my router into my MTA and away I went.... It seams that the firmware had improved alot over the past couple of months. Also, whatever you do, do not talk yourselve into unchecking the DHCP/NAT box under the Advanced Menu, it will open up a whole can of worms. Cry LOL I just finish putting things back togather from that one. Basicaly, just plug it in and wait for your number to be transfered (mine took a little over a month). Very Happy

Nana,

I felt the same way. After some good help from some pretty knowledgable people here, I am ready to network my home and get Vonage up and running. There is no stupid question if you really don't know the answer.

Good luck

Even if I had only one computer though, I would still want a router for the better security it offers. You can pick up a router (non-wireless) for about $40.

ATA= Analog Telephone Adapter... applies just as well to the Motorola box as the Cisco box.

I realize... but I just thought I'd give the newbie the full technical answer.

After all, there are also forums where people believe DVD means Digital Video Disc!
