Any advice? I want to set up a US Vonage account for my sister who has moved to the UK and now has BT Internet. This would give her toll free calling back to the States. Does anyone have any experience with this? Yes, she is maintaining a US credit card with a US billing address.

I would imagine that it would work just as good as if she had a UK acct.. since Vonage has service in the UK there shouldn't be any big issues..

she cold even add a UK virtual number and still have a number for incomming calls in the UK as well Smile or she could get the UK service and get a US virtual number and just have all you guys call her.. many possibilities Smile

I just hooked up my Vonage router (linksys rt31p2) to my existing BT wireless router setup and got dialtone the first time with no disruption of BT service. I had been dragging my feet since we moved here back in July thinking I would have to devote some quiet time to getting it to work - voila! We subscribed to Vonage back in June knowing we were moving to the UK. We wanted to be able to have friends and family call us on our existing phone number (we had our home landline switched from bellsouth to vonage).

p.s. i did not even run the setup that came with the Vonage equipment. The only thing you need to make sure you have is either a 220v ac adaptor for your linksys or a step-down transformer so you can use your U.S. power adapter once you get over here, AND a phone cable that has the 'small' little connector on both ends. The phone jacks here (at least in our house) have a wider plug than U.S. style jacks.

cheers!

following up - my Vonage is working great - BUT I did have a little glitch - tried to hook up my router using an adapter instead of a step down transformer and it blew my router up immediately. Had to wait for a new modem (from the US) and once I hooked it back into the transformer it worked fine. Now I'm afraid to try a different adapter. MTSCHNEID how do you have yours hooked up electrically?

Unless the power supply is rated for 240V plugging it into the UK mains via an adapter will blow it every time. You'll either need a transformer or a power supply rated for 240V.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I realize that I will need to take a voltage converter to the UK to step the voltage down from 240v to 110V, but what about the phone jack connector from their phones to my US router. I understand that the size of the jack/connectors in the UK are larger than the US. So in order for it to work did you take your US phone with you or was you able to get an adapter. What about the Ethernet connect from the UK modem to the US router, is this physically the same size?

Thanks

Ethernet is the same everywhere, it's a universal standard.

As for the phone connection, depending on your phone you may find you can get away with a simple UK/US adapter. You may have to buy an appropriate phone however.

Where can you get an adapter or is it better to just bring a phone with me?

i believe the best thing for her to do is to sign up for a US account and have the phone adapter sent to the US address and then have it sent to the UK. that would actually be the best alternative for her. incidentally, if she signs up for a US account, the calls to landline numbers in UK and ireland will already be part of her unlimitted plan
