PostPosted: Thu Dec 29, 2005 8:52 pm    Post subject: Random Internet/Network Disconnection Reply with quote Back to top

Okay, first of all, I've searched the forum, and found some topics that sorta touched on my problem, but none of them actually had a solution that I could find.

So, I have Comcast Cable Internet. I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router w/2 Phone Ports for Vonage. I have a Linksys Router BEFSR41 v4 with the latest firmware. Windows XP SP2. Motorola SB5120 Surfboard Cable Modem.

Internet > Cable Modem > BEFSR41 > PC and WRT54G on seperate ports of BEFSR41.

Now, when my WRT54G (Vonage) is connected to the router, my PC randomly (seemingly) will get a "A network cable has been disconnected." error, and my AIM, WoW, etc. will disconnect. Within seconds, the network error goes away and I can reconnect the services, but they do disconnect. However, if my Vonage Router is NOT connected to the Linksys BEFSR41 router, the connection so far has been fine, without any disconnects.

I haven't been able to tell if the Vonage goes down at all.

I've tried my router setup with QoS and w/o QoS, no difference.

I tried having Internet > Cable Modem > Vonage Router WRT54G > PC, same issues with the random disconnects.

Internet > Cable Modem > PC works fine, just as the Router and PC sans the Vonage Router does.

So, basically, if I connect Vonage to my network in any way, my network connection on my PC randomly disconnects.

Any thoughts?

I'm having the same problem with my BEFSR41, after upgrading the firmware to the latest one. For me, the cable modem looks fine when the connection drops sporadically for short periods of time. I'm thinking its a firmware issue with that newest version (1.46.2 something like that). It also screwed up my voice quality. However when I loaded older firmware it doesn't fix any of my problems.

Here's my thread on the same topic: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic10237.html

I've pretty much decided on just replacing the router.

Well, it COULD be the Vonage router I'm using, but it's brand new, so unless it's a lemon... I dunno.

Well I'm going to replace my current BEFSR41 with a WRT54GS even though I don't need wireless at this time, because of the QOS features and the SPI firewall, the cool stuff you can add with third party firmware, and because a lot of people on here seem to be happy with it with Vonage running behind it.

However if you don't want to go that route, download the older 1.44.2 firmware for your BEFSR41 router and use that. Make sure you get the correct one for your model version. After doing some research around the 'net it seems like that is the most stable version and can help with your disconnects. With that older firmware, my router seems to be running without a hitch, and the audio on my phone calls are much improved.
