Anybody know if any of the other Voip services out there have similar issues such as this? There are a few alternatives out there if you still wanted Voip. Anybody have any friends on any of the VoIPs out there who have similar issues??

I think it's kind of funny that the "Vonage Service Status" on the left side of the forum mentions nothing about the dashboard being down (I just tried to log in) but instead it tries to sell you more lines!

I may have posted this earlier in the thread, or in another thread, I don't remember.

User reviews of all types of services, including Voip.

In its price range, Vonage doesn't do too badly.

Evidently the "people do stupid things" catch phrase has caught on at the Web Server administrator level at Vonage. . .

Maybe we should have Carlos Mencia offer a "DeeDeeDee" Award. . .

Can't believe that the servers are down AGAIN this morning. . .sheesh. . this is REALLY gettin old.

To their defense, a complete corporate move is not an easy thing, and stuff goes wrong. .

Corporate Relocation 101 -

Plan for every external service profider to fail to meet your move date
Hire people who have been there and done that
Run in parallel until all systems are stable
Use executive level coordination of advertising and relocation

Hold the head of IT and Marketing responsible for this one. And while your at it, remind the CEO it is their job to get everyone on the same page.

Don't give us excuses, give us results.

I've been running BV in parallel for two months and have found fewer problems then Vonage, a lower rate and better customer service (not off shore). Yes, I can actually speak with an engineer. One more thing, their support system only has two menu levels with far fewer choices.

That is all - and that is no way to run a company. It ranks right up there with PayPal on eBay.

Finally got my number completely ported over and recieved an email today saying.....

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT YOU WILL NEED TO REACTIVATE YOUR 911 DIALING CAPABILITY FOR THE NUMBER YOU TRANSFERRED TO Vonage.

guess i will have to wait for that 2 hour window that the Dashboard "actually works" to do it...

Believe me, I'm not defending the failure to plan for the move (if that's what is causing the recent rash of problems). I've been involved in complete corporate moves with three companies, and all three have been accomplished with zero unplanned downtime, solid communications plans, contingency plans, and open status communication to the users.

However unfortunately, stuff DOES go wrong sometimes, and exceeds the plan.

Of course, I'm guessing the move may have something to do with the current web site woes. Since no one at Vonage is offering reasons or justification, much less announcing the problems exist on their service status page, that is pure and utter speculation on my part. It could be that someone urinated on the server, for all I know. Wink

I agree with you, and I also have three corporate moves under my belt each requiring no service interruption on 24/7 operations (financial processing). Enough of that. We can all throw stones (as I did, and have them thrown at us).

The real problem as I see it is Vonage's lack of communication in general. It begs the question, why is there not a status block on the home page. Gotta ask marketing about that one Wink

The other lesson to be learned here has been around for a long time. Being on the edge means getting burned. Voip is an immature technology being marketed to the public like POTS and there lies a lot of the problem.

Funny that you should use the word "lies". Wink

I can't argue with it, though. Vonage is not what it is advertised to be, but at the end of the day, for me, it's a good value for the money. But I've been in networking for a long time, and I never believed that the service would be perfect, or offer zero downtime, or be a painless, no-hassle install. I wanted a phone line, and I wanted it cheap, and I got one that has never had a major failure on me.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not happy when services go down, and problems occur. But it's worth the money to me just to have the phone line and unlimited long distance. A plain, basic phone line with unlimited long distance from Verizon would cost me over $50 a month. When the Vonage extras work, it brings the Verizon equivalent to almost $75 a month. When they don't, I'm still getting good value for my money as long as I can make and receive calls, and personally that's never been a problem for me.

Obviously, if I start having some of the missing calls, "number is out of service" messages, or serious problems, then I'll have to seriously reevaluate things. I have to be able to depend on my phone to be at least fairly reliable. So far, for me, it's passed that test.

I guess it all just depends on how important all the features are. No, you're not getting everything you were promised, at least not all the time. Agreed. But are you getting enough to justify the cost? If so, there you go. If not, then it's time to go elsewhere.

But given the nature of Voip, and the fact that the telcos want nothing more than to kill it in its tracks because they detest competition (and many of the telcos CONTROL the POTS side of the VoIP<->POTS gateways Vonage and all others depend on)... well, you can save the money and go with it, warts and all, or you can go to your local monopoly and spend the extra to get two dedicated strings of copper, knowing they won't be interfering with your connection any more because you are paying them now and not going with their competition.
