I will be networking 3 computers in my home, utilizing a Vonage dedicated fax number to my Brother IntelliFAX 1800C. My router will be a LinkSys BEFSX41 (certified by Vonage)

I read that you want to put the ATA behind the router:

MODEM-----> ROUTER----->COMPUTERS 1,2,3,ATA---->FAX AND PHONE(from the ATA).

According to my reading here, this setup does not allow the ATA to maximize voice quality but it does keep the ATA from trying to be a router.

Despite all of the discussions regarding QoS, I have never had a problem with my ATA behind my SMC 2404WBR 802.11b router. I believe that voice quality is only an issue if you are working with limited bandwidth.

I use Optimum Online with 900 up and 2600 down and my Vonage calls are clearer than my Verizon POTS was. When I first got Vonage I hammered it pretty good (at least for my normal usage) and the voice quality never suffered one bit.

With the ATA behind the router I did the following simulatneously - A.) Downloaded a large file, B.) Connected my fiance's laptop to her work VPN, C.) Connected/played Madden 2004 on my PS2 (ethernet to wireless bridge), and D.) Made a call over Vonage to my friend. Everything worked fine - my download slowed down a bit, but the call never faltered and everything else stayed connected.

If you have the bandwidth available QoS shouldn't be an issue if your router does what it is supposed to do - direct IP traffic.

My upstream speed is nowhere near that. Only 135kbps

Well, try it both ways and see which is better. I don't know what type of load you will be putting on your Internet connection with 3 pc's, phone, & fax but it will most likely not be a major problem unless you are doing a lot of simultaneous tasks (i.e., VPN, download/FTP, gaming, etc.) Also, try using the bandwidth saver option in your dashboard if you are having trouble. This will lower voice quality but increase overall stability.

If you do intend to put a heavy load on your connection you may simply need a bigger pipe. I am not sure what the ISP options are in your area, but I have had no problem with Optimum Online in Upstate NY. If you have DSL maybe you can upgrade your bandwidth.

I notice, however, that you indicated you will have a dedicated fax line.

It IS likely that you will have some problems talking on the phone and trying to fax at the same time.

The fax will be especially prone to failure due to the sensitivity of these machines.

This all may be acceptable, since the second fax may be more for convenience than simultaneity, but it could cause problems.

I can't really ever remember getting(or sending for that matter) a fax while I was on the phone. I don't forsee a problem. I have the codec set @ 50kbps in my dashboard. My upload speed is around 135kbps so three way conference calls would be a problem for sure but that isn't a need for me right now. I think the setup I described in the original post, along with my current dashboard settings should give me a good point to start from.

I appreciate the replies.
Happy VoIP'ing to all!

The one computer is basically a email terminal along with some file sharing from files on my machine. The other will be used almost exclusively with TurboCad and a bit of browsing, at night almost exclusively. My use will be 80% daytime. I really can't imagine any serious internet intensive multi-tasking going on. I think we should be ok.

Thanks much
