Please correct me if I am wrong. I currently have my house phone and DSL on the same line with Sprint. It is my understanding that I can not cancel my phone service without canceling both. Is this correct? Between long distance and base charges, I pay on average $50/month. That would be a $25/month savings if I was a Vonage customer.

Thanks,

You'll have to check with Sprint to answer that question. Even if you can delete the phone service, you won't save the whole $25/month. You'll still be paying for the DSL service.

Thanks. I didn't include the DSL charges ($35) in the $50. I called them and they said I couldn't just cancel my regular phone service without canceling both. Thus, Vonage would be no use to me.

See if you have Cable bradband available in your area and get rid of Sprint.

Cable broadband is not available in my area. I live in a rural area in which Comcast recently (2-4 years ago) bought the previous cable company out. Comcast stated that the existing services were primitive and it will take some time for them to offer high definition cable or cable broadband in my area. Thus, I am stuck with using DSL through Sprint.

Thanks,

Thanks,

around 6 weeks ago FCC passed the law which requires the 4 biggest dsl service providers to offer barebone (naked) DSL service, unfortunately Sprint is not within the 4 biggest ones so first I'd check if they offer that service at all because they don't have to

the other thing is that there is a big chance you won't be able to bring your phone number from Sprint to Vonage because they don't have an agreement in this matter

what I'd do then is to check with other dsl providers (the biggest 4) how much they want for naked dsl and calculate if it pays off to switch to residential 500 plan

In my area (rural), Sprint is the only DSL carrier I can get. What is a barebone DSL service anyway? Who are the big 4? Also, it doesn't bother me not being able to keep my phone number is it means saving money.

Thanks for the input,

Lloyd

Barebones DSL means DSL service without the voice-telephone service. The issue is that by forcing you to accept both, the phone company gets you to give them more money. Barebones DSL would be DSL without the voice line.

I wish I could get barebones DSL for my office since I already have Vonage. I would be able to take my Vonage adapter right to my office without need to get a new number from Bell South. I wish my office building had an ethernet connection in each office. If they did, I would not need to deal with Bellsouth at all.
