So you've been successful, but use The Linksys RTP300 in place of the DI-604 Verizon supplied? Did you try your RTP300 behind the DLink?

If you can, always use the RTP300 directly connected to your ISP modem then whatever else you want on your network. It can work after other devices, but if your devices block any ports then it won't. Remember either port forward on third party routers or disable the Firewall.

Right, but I don't have the RTP300, I've got a Cisco ATA 186 which was behind a DLink DI-604 up until now.

Okay, so the next obvious question is: "Is there something else that can be done short of disabling the whole firewall?" I hate to have the entire HW firewall down. Is this something which I should expect Linksys to fix at some point or is it a special feature of these GX routers?

SPI is garbage. It doesn't do anything for you except slow down traffic. The basic theory behind SPI (stateful packet inspection) is that the firewall looks at each packet that goes through it and tries to match it up to an existing data stream. Sounds simple, right? Alas, in practice, when your Voip adapter is slamming packets through the firewall at the rate it does, the firewall has a hard time keeping up. It ends up either delaying (which leads to packet discards) or drops some packets.

Unless Linksys is going to "fix" the router by putting a much faster processor and more memory into the router, I wouldn't hold my breath. Most consumer routers on the market now have an SPI firewall. None of them really have the power to do it though.

I've switched to FIOS from Charter cable and have seen an improvement in reliability of Vonage service. Under Charter, I would need to reset the RT31P2 and cable modem about once a week. It was never clear whether the root cause was the RT31P2 or the cable modem. However, Charter had plenty of service interruptions which they acknowledged (but only after phoning them), so I switched.

Now, with FIOS it's better but not trouble-free. I’ve had about a half dozen incoming calls where the phones rings, the caller ID appears, but neither the caller or I can hear each other. The caller usually will hang up and call back. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries before we can hear each other.

The setup is as diagramed below;

FIOS => DI-604 => Hub => RT31P2

My son's PC and a wireless router are connected to the DI-604 and my PC is connected to the hub. The only connection to the RT31P2 is the “internet” jack and phone out.

Outgoing calls are always made without delay and all calls, once connected are clear.
I guess I could try to replace the DI-604 with the RT31P2. Verizon says they only support the DI-604. The Verizon installer tried to convince me that Vonage wouldn’t work at all with FIOS but backed off once it clearly worked.

Any suggestions?

Looks like my problem has been solved... The Cisco ATA 186 definaetely doesnt like the way Verizon's DLink DI-604 assigns IP addresses. I've had my old Netgear router inbetween the Cisco and the DI-604 for a few days now and all my problems have gone away. No more random dialtone loss.
