It's been an annoying past few days...

Quick history: I was using my MTA connected to my Linksys router without any problems, I was however missing the option to reserve IP's in the Linksys's DHCP server, so I upgraded to a nice new Netgear 614 wireless G router, that was the start of my problems.

The MTA couldn't get an IP so I had to set it to static, but worse of all I would see it lose it's dialtone every 30 minutes and go into a neverending 4-flash.

I tried everything. SPI was off, tried putting the MTA in DMZ, but nothing helped. Vonage upgraded me to .16 claiming that was the solution, which it of course was not.

Today their advice was to put the MTA directly on my cable modem and hook the router to the PC port of the MTA.

So far so good but here is my current problem:

In my previous setup I had 2 open ports (443 and 995) for my mailserver, the way stuff is setup at the moment I can't reach either of these ports from the outside world. I've forwarded the ports on my MTA, put the Netgear into the DMZ on the MTA (new in .16 firmware) but nothing helps.

This is the current situation:

Port 443 traffic > MTA with forwarded port 443 to Netgear IP ( > Netgear router forwarding port 443 to mail server IP (

I really depend on those ports being open so I can now have a working phone OR working email when not at home...

Also, in the past I tried putting the MTA first but every now and then it would block the connection to eveyrthing behind it requiring a reboot, is there a solution to reboot the MTA remotely? Vonage activated Telnet on the device but I of course don't have a login for it...

Any help much appreciated.

Well, that confirms my fears about the DMZ on the MTA fixing my problems. I was trying to resurect an old DirectX7 internet game I play and the MTA has been in the way of it. If you look at the thread titled "SPI Firewall, Netgear WGT624" you'll find that many people have been having trouble with placing the MTA behind Netgear's WGR614 and WGR624.

I have attempted the same methods as you and I still have to have this unstable MTA in front of the Netgear. The tech I worked with last night also put me on the .16, but did not say that it would increase the chances of the MTA working behind the router. He stated that it was to take care of some problems with the MTA dropping calls and dropping the line. It also is supposed to add some monitoring tools for the engineers to use in analizing problems. The tech was suggesting that the WGR614 may be getting fooled into thinking that the MTA was being hit with a DOS attack and then dropping the packet from Vonage. He said that this problem was occurring on some Linksys routers and that all they needed to do was adjust the threshold on the DOS settings of the firewall. He could not find a way to do this in the WGR614.

Either way, the wife is starting to get ticked about having to reboot the MTA every other day. I may have to go buy a wired router to get me through this problem per Vonage's suggestion. I think I'm contacting Netgear about this next to see what they have to say. Their wired routers work out of the box with Vonage from what I hear and I'd like ot know why the Wireless routers do not.

I broke down and and bought D-Link DI604 Router that I run my MTA and Netgear WGT624 thru.

After rebates, it is only $20.00 at OfficeDepot.

The last 2 days I've not had any problems. The service has been there when I need it.

The only solution with MTA firmware 1.16 was to put the MTA in front of the router but that would not let me VPN into work.

So far putting the D-LINK router infront of both the MTA and Netgear Router has solved my issues.
