in Tivo, go to ->Messages & Setup ->Recorder & Phone Setup ->Phone Connection ->Change Dialing Options ->Set Dial Prefix. Enter ,#034 and hit Select.
Next, go to Set Dial-In Number -> Enter your Area Code and Press Select to Continue. if your Tivo Doesn't have a list of Numbers, hit select so it will dial-Up and grap a new list. and Make Sure you tell the Unit to dial 1 and your area code then the number.
NOTICE Do NOT put the 1 and area code with the prefix, it won't work.
Directv had me do the above steps and right after it got a new number and started dialing 1-area code and the number and worked everytime and hasn't failed yet. |

Are you sure you told it to get a new number, and not put the 1+area code in the prefix? this was the mistake i made. |

I am sure. My unit is already configured to dial 1+area code using an external modem. All I had to change was the prefix and test it. I can see the calls in my Vonage activity, but the Tivo was not able to establish a connection. |

#034 works on the DirecTivo only, not SA Tivos. |

I have a Hughes SD-DVR40 and I cannot get it to connect via phone over my Vonage line. I have never succeeded. I had to take it to my neighbor's house to use his phone line to finish my initial setup.
I've tried the ,#034 trick with no success. I've tried all kinds of things. I can see the call activity on my vonage account but the Tivo fails to connect every time.
Who has gotten this to work? I use DirecTV, by the way.
Is it possible to use the USB ports on this Tivo unit to connect to the internet and thus get around the need for a phone line? I've heard that I can't do this since I have DirecTV.
Someone please help!

Finally succeeded, after many hours on the phone with tech support, with as many different answers as the number of techs I spoke with ...
Here's what finally made my Series 1 connect:
1. Rep set the packet size down to 10 (k?)
2. Rep turned OFF the echo for FAX
3. Rep had me power off the LynkSys box, wait 15 seconds, then power back on
4. Set the dialing prefix option to ",#019"
No other dialing prefix or option -- and it started working when all else had failed.
The key differences from this last rep were turning the echo off, and restarting the adapter.
Hope this helps someone else. |

Same here. I've spent 2 weeks fooling with external modems (56K Courier and 36.6 sportster).
The external modems can actually pick up and start a connection, but they never complete the handshake (which I attribute a problem with the Hughes DirecTV Tivo, not the modems).
The modem didn't start working until I called a Vonage Tech (which takes no less than 45min each time I try) and they changed something and had me enter the upgrade code into the unit.
Now.. I think the second port is dying/dead on the Linksys unit. I'm not so sure that's a bad thing as I'm sick of fighting this. The Vonage VoIP unit needs to broadcast a stronger signal for devices that are expecting alot more (Tivo for one...).
*sigh* |
