I tried hooking up a WRT54GX4 in front of my WRTP54G this evening with poor results. Both inbound and outbound audio include rythmic outages in audio, about a second apart. Does anyone have any clues on this?

I have Verizon Fios coming into the X4 and have set QoS for the MAC address of the WRTP to High.

Is this something someone has seen before with a simple solution?

You have two wireless routers. Have you disabled the wireless on one of them? How was performance both for phone and internet before you added the new one?

I disabled the wireless on the WRTP and enabled it on the X4. Performance prior to the move (with only the WRTP) was very good, but with some odd delays on internet usage.

Has anything that you haven't mentioned changed? No new 2.4 GHz cordless phone, I hope. Have you tried re-booting everthing?

What are your current upload and download speeds? How do they compare to what you had before? What does a test at www.testyourvoip.com say? Does going back to your old configuration restore things to the way they were?

Hi,

I also just added a WRT54GX4 to my network (replacing a functional WRT54G (worked well with Vonage - Motorola VT1005V MTA). Upon replacing the old router with the new, I too experience audio chop at a frequency of 1 - 1.5 seconds and it will degrade further with time (where the status LED on the VT1005 will begin blinkin as if trying to reconnect). Everything I've read points to ineffective Quality of Service (QoS) handling by the WRT54GX4 and although it has capabilities in it's administrative interface to assign high priority and bandwidth to the MTA equipment, it doesn't seem to matter (or work for that matter). I'm hoping there is a configuration solution for the WRT54GX4 vs. having to put the MTA in front of the Router as this plays havoc with my VPN I am required to use for work (not to mention foiling any port-forwarding I setup for various web services in the router). Hope someone a lot smarter than me has figured this one out! Eek

I have a WRT54GX4 router too and I have Vonage working pretty well. I put my Vonage adapter in the DMZ of the WRT54GX and it is working. My only issue now is that I have a lot of static on my phone when I receive and incoming call. The static is loud on the receiving phone but barely noticeable on the calling phone. I've posted here about the static but got not responces. I think I'm going to have to break down and call CS Sad .

UPDATE: I found a solution to my issue (see above) from a contributor on the Linksys forum. It was suggested that the SPI firewall does not have the horsepower to process the volume of packets generated by the Voip and that by disabling it, the problem resolves itself. I disabled my SPI firewall (default this is 'enabled') in the router admin interface and 'viola', my audio chop disappeared. We briefly discussed any security compromises in doing this and I think there is minimal risk given the inherent security provided by NAT along with a good virus protection solution on the client computers. The statement made was that all, but the most diligent hackers would be foiled - and even with it on - the most diligent hackers probably aren't interested in my router. Before disabling the SPI firewall I made sure the 'Prevent WAN ping' checkbox was checked (again, it should be as default) and upon disabling it, I had a third-party attempt to ping my IP (the IP exposed to the internet on the cable-modem) and there was NO response - so it looks like it still appears invisibile even with the SPI firewall disabled. So, to wrap up this verbose entry, my current configuration is: cable modem -> WRT54GX4 -> Vonage/Motorola VT1005V MTA. All is working well - happy! Razz

Yes, disabling the firewall is the solution I ended up using as well.

As to the static sound on incoming calls: I started experiencing both this *and* not being able to hear incoming callers on ocassion just recently. The timing of this problem does not seem to coincide with my GX4 installation but could be the new .58 firmware on the WRTP54G. I am also thinking maybe this is just a Vonage server-side problem.

I haven't browsed the forum for this problem as yet. Has anyone else been experiencing this lately?

It's been mentioned in a couple of other threads... If you wait to answer until the second ring (or later), the white noise problem shouldn't happen. It's related to a few of the changes they made in the 1.00.58 firmware, Vonage appears to be working on it, as I've received a couple of phone calls from Vonage techs wanting to try a few things to remedy it. Rolling back to prior firmware versions does correct the white noise issue, but brings in the problems which those older firmware versions had. The aforementioned workaround seems to work. Also, some phones seem to have more noise than others with this problem. I've found my cordless phones don't exhibit it anywhere near as much as the hardwired ones.
