PostPosted: Thu Mar 11, 2004 10:03 am    Post subject: Dropped calls from cell phones only - Please help!! Reply with quote Back to top

I am a newbie to Vonage and have experienced minimal problems with the service, but I have recenlty been getting disconnected after an incoming call is placed from a cell phone that is out of the area (i.e. not a local number). After my service is disconnected, I cannot even get a dial-tone on any of my phones (I have 3 phones connected). I think it may be my setup but am not sure of how to proceed. I have the MOTO ATA connected to a Netgear CG814M (All-In-One) and my ISP is Comcast. I called into tech support the other day and asked the tech if he thought that it was because of the router/cable modem/wireless etc. and he said since I was able to get Vonage to work that it may be something else. I also cannot get to the ATA web interface nor ping 192.168.0.10. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

I don't believe you'll ever get a response to a PING to the ATA.

Did you configure a static or dynamic IP for the ATA (if you don't know, then it's probably dynamic and you should be able to verify the IP that the Netgear box assigned by going to the Netgear's setup page via a web browser pointed to IT'S setup page).

I configured it to be dynamic and also set up the port forwarding as instructed in some of these other topics.

Ahh... well... I can't say for sure this is the problem, but it is A problem!

You might be OK, but let me ask you this... to what IP address did you forward those ports? In theory your adapter could get a different IP address next time it or your router reboots. This is why it's called "dynamic", because it changes (or at least COULD change --- practially speaking it may do so only very rarely). Anyway, to use port forwarding you really have to specify a static (or non-changing) IP address for your adapter.

That way, everytime it comes on or reboots it has the same address and those ports you forwarded reach their destination.

To reconfigure the adapter, disconnect it from the router and attach it and your PC directly.

First off, thanks for your help and the quick responses!

Now, the business at hand - I set up the port forwarding to 192.168.0.10 and have since been checking my DHCP to see if it grabs another ip so that I can change my port forwarding settings, but up 'til now - no change. I have had Voip for about 2 weeks and have only had 3 disconnects since I hooked up the MTA. All 3 disconnects were from incoming cell phone calls. It happened twice yesterday from the same cell phone, but the calls were over a 6hr span in which I received other calls that did not disconnect the service within that time. The day I spoke with TS at Vonage they told me they would upgrade the MTA's firmware. I'm assuming it went through, but have no way to determine the firmware rev# since I can't get into the MTA's web interface. I will try and connect the MTA to a PC only and reconfigure it as you suggested. Thanks again...

Ok, well I tried to connect the MTA just to the computer and was successfully able to get into the MTA's web interface. I disabled NAT as is posted in some of the other topics, but once I did that and tried to get back in I was unsuccessful. I tried several times and not a single time was I able to get in.

Quick question - I got into the MTA via 192.168.102.1, however each time I check my DHCP settings on my router is says that the MTA is on 192.168.0.10. Is this an internal IP and the 102.1 a(n) external IP addr? Also, is there any way to try and get back into the MTA's interface? I've tried it with 3 different computers now and each time I can't seem to have much success other than the very first time. Is it due to disabling the NAT on the MTA?

Thanks...

Hook the PC up to the PC port on the Moto. Then, change the PC's IP address on the LAN connection connected to the Moto to 192.168.102.69 (69, or anything except 1 which is the MTA). Fire up the browser, go to http://192.168.102.1, and voila.

Maybe the dropped calls are the cell phone's problem and not yours

Great - thanks for your suggestions!

I still get some disconnects, but I am able to contact the person right back and not have much of a problem after that. Before the line would go dead and so I'd have to reboot the Moto.

I am still in the reviewing stage at this point...
