I'm asking for a friend of mine. She has 1024/512 cable internet, and it seems to have pretty good speeds on all the tests (I'm awaiting her latest results via email) and when she downloads and uploads files to and from my ftp server it's going at a decent rate too. Also we've done the Remote Assistance lots of times and never had a problem. But when we're on the phone I can hear her fine but she cannot hear me. And what little she does hear sounds a horrible cellphone reception. And it's regardless of whether I'm using a cellphone, landline, or my Vonage phone (which I've had NO problems with). And it happens regardless of who she is talking to. Of course my connection is also 6 times faster, but oh well. I've been reading and seeing that a lot of people seem to be having troubles, and her cable company insists that it is her phone and not the internet service. She can hardly even talk to them because of the not being able to hear the other party problem.

Don't know what else to tell her at this point... But we ARE going to try a phone call either tonight or tomorrow with the computer shut down. I'm starting to suspect it since she's had a friend who's not me using it to chat and check email and ended up with a ton of porn popups.

OK. I'm not sure how someone could be using her computer without her knowing it, and it shouldn't affect Vonage call quality if the Vonage system is set up right. In any case, if your experiments don't solve the problem, get back to us with more details. Include her measured (not guaranteed) upload and down load speeds, equipment details, and detailed test results from a call to www.testyourvoip.com .

Oh she knows it. She's practically lost her computer to this guy and he's always downloading all kinds of junk onto it and I would be very surprised if it wasnt spewing something to chew up bandwidth. She started complaining last night that the whole thing was running slow. She's about four hours away or I would go fix it for her, and for good LOL

I'm still waiting on those test results, but she has to pry this guy off the pc first. Her ISP tells her it's Vonage (they said because of slowdowns in the N.E.) but I seriously think her computer is hogging the bandwidth and trying to talk her through the QoS settings is like trying to teach a dog to fly. Especially since she can't hear me. Lol

It sounds as if your friend has more serious problems than technical ones. In any case, get back to us when you've finished your own investigation and maybe we can help. QoS settings sound like the name of this game, but you'll need some data to be sure. You might also suggest that she re-boot everything, powering up in the correct order. That's the answer to a lot of problems.
