I'm located in Tulsa, OK and recently decided to switch to Vonage but was informed that I can't port my current telephone number. If that wasn't bad enough, I was also informed that I couldn't reserve ANY local number for Tulsa, OK or even any number within the entire state.
I've tried emailing customer service, but I get no response. If anyone has any answers, please help - I'm rather confused! |

Unfortunately, that's correct. There are no Vonage numbers in Oklahoma, according to their web site.
Understand that, in order to offer you a phone number, Vonage has to establish a relationship with a local phone company so they can set up a "gateway" to get the phone call on their network so they can route it to you. Obviously, either the phone companies in Oklahoma aren't interested, or Vonage is not pursuing a relationship at this point.
You CAN set up a Vonage line, and you can call people in Oklahoma all you want, since there is no such thing as "long distance charges" with Vonage when calling in the US. But they can't make a local call to you.
One alternative is to set up an 800# for $5 a month, limited to 100 minutes a month of inbound calls. But if people call you, you can hang up and call them right back.
Other than that, well, chances are your local phone company is protecting their local numbers so you can't go to the competition. Sorry. |

In my case 100 minutes a month would be plenty for inbound calls. I do alot more outbound then inbound so that would work perfectly if I were in that sort of situation. I was not aware people used telephones in OK. Best of luck. |

Well, plus, the per-minute rate on inbound 800# calls is 5 cents a minute after the 100 minutes is up. So it would take a LOT of calls to make up for the difference between Vonage and the average local telco... |

What's strange is that I see press releases that are dated over a year ago that state the service would be available in Tulsa and Oklahaoma City. If you look on the Vonage Forum Menu/Vonage Information/Vonage Area Codes, you will see Tulsa and OKC listed as available.
I wonder if there is an issue with the Enhanced 911 availability which caused them to pull service??? |

I don't think they can offer new service to anyone in areas that the 911 changes have not yet taken affect. I'm not sure on that but I thought I read it somewhere.
It could be a combination of that and not being able to deal with the local telco's. My best friend in Lafayette LA wants to get Vonage after seeing my positive experience and he can't right now because they don't have any local numbers there. |

Well ok, I actually live in Sand Springs, a town meer miles away from Tulsa (I visit Tulsa on a daily basis) and I have a local (918 area code) number. I signed up for it just a few months ago. Not sure what the problem is. |

Could be that Oklahoma was available once, and they had to pull it, or something. Dunno. |

Weird, on their website, you can now sign up for Tulsa again. Maybe just a problem with the system? |

Woohoo! You can sign up for Tulsa again. No idea why it disappeared for a while. |
