Dropped calls are caused by one of MANY things:

1. High latency on the line.(very common)

2. Low bandwidth.(extremely common)

3. Packet loss on the line.(very common)

4. Problem on Vonage's side (rare)

5. Firmware upgrade trying to get through. (Everytime you use the phone it interrupts it.) (semi-rare)

6. Land line carrier having trouble forwarding Vonage calls (common)

7. Device is defective (Semi-rare-semi-common)

First an upload bandwidth and download bandwidth test at : http://www.testmy.net

Do a ping test to a google.com or yahoo.com

Do a tracert test to them also.

Check with Vonage if there is any status issues with the area codes that are calling you or you are calling.

Hard reset the device or do a power cycle

Not hooked up to house wiring.

Using Window xp's Firewall.

Phone wire is working ok, using a brand new phone now also.

Network setup is - Ethernet cable from the Cable/DSL modem’s Ethernet port to the WAN port on the Phone Adapter.

Ethernet cable from the PC port, on the Phone Adapter, to the Ethernet port, on the computer.

Power cable to the Cable/DSL modem.

Congratulations!

What was the problem?

The more we know about the problems people run into and how they were solved, the more we can help out people in the future. Wink

Tech Support from Vonage and I did a step by step troubleshoot. Starting with my modem, which was fine, next we tested my isp, also was fine. ( I'm not sure what all the tests were called as im not to tech savy) Then we did a recycle of modem and Linksys Router, switching my phone port from 1 to 2 and that solved the problem. My Linksys Router phone port 1 was not functioning correctly. This Vonage tech Support person I got ahold of was very patient, spoke very clearly and kept returning my calls as I was getting dropped every five minutes. Now thats Great Service!!!!! ...........

One Happy Customer Very Happy

Turns out port 1 was ok, as the dropped calls started coming again 2 days after switching over to port 2.

Since then I have placed two more tech support calls each one attempting different avenues.

Tried all the forum recommendations.

Today was a last ditch effort, tech support was fast and patient again.... He had me set my router to the default settings as this was never tried before.

He told me if after this I still get the dropped calls that I would need to replace my router, as it is defective. being beyond my warranty It would cost 99.00 or I could go and purchase one.

My dilemma is this: I started Vonage back in April, I have Always been having dropped calls since the get go. So if the reason was a defective router from the very beginning I feel cheated in that the router was never working properly to begin with. My replacement should be free ( that was part of the incentive to start using Vonage- the free router)

a fair warning to others as to what should have been done from the beginning was to set up a trouble ticket and keep calling as each step to fix this problem was not working..... my trouble ticket would have never been closed and perhaps then my replacement might have been free and clear.

I'm hoping this last fix works, If it doesn't I will cancel Vonage in April and add the extra $ to minutes on my cell phone.

The dropped calls were my only issue with Vonage.
