Has anyone tried the new Vonage® WiFi Phone? How does it compare to using a TA in voice quality? I have Comcast broadband but I wonder if there is any QoS with the phone over WiFi or will I need to get a better Router(using old Netgear). If so can anyone recommend a model?

I may want to use the phone on other WiFi networks .

The phone itself will not be capable of QoS, since it is just a client on your Wireless network. Your router will have to be. And I'm not at all sure what models of router are capable of QoS that includes wireless. Maybe all of them are, but you'd have the set up QoS with the MAC address of the phone and see.

I strongly suspect, as WiFi wireless phones become popular, WiFi hotspot owners will start clamping down on bandwidth per connection, especially the free hotspots. I know if I had a hotspot on my current connection, and two WiFi'ers hooked in, I'd be completely unable to use MY Vonage line. Even one would be iffy. Wink

Thanks looks like I'll have to wait and see if anyone has tried one. I would probably only be using it with my networks at home friends and work.

I will receive my WiFi phone tomorrow and plan to use it at hotels and hotspots in New York, Istanbul, and Beirut over the next couple of weeks. This should serve as a very exhaustive test and I'll keep you posted on the results.

For QoS purposes, on a home or small office network, the WiFi connection should not have an impact. In those cases, the limit is normally the uplink out of the router to the world. If you have 11m on your wireless AP but only 1m or 384k uplink to the internet, then - unless you are doing some major file transfers very locally - the wireless link does not matter - the limit would be the same as if you were on a wired TA - probably most like a cordless phone connected to a wired TA. If you are in a crowded place with lots of people sharing the same AP on a company LAN, then there may be a difference but if you are going to Vonage service, the uplink out of the building is still your likely limit.

I really would like to use the WiFi phone as an added hand set but I guess you cannot get it for existing accounts.

This has got me concerned on getting Vonage, especially the WiFi phone. I have two Replay TV digital video recorders, and use Internet Video Sharing (IVS) through Poopli. I could be sending a show to another Replay unit that will take 16 to 48 hours to complete. My Internet connection on my PC is not affected when transferring a show. I can update my web site with no problems while uploading a show.

I like it. Works well (decent quality). Works pretty far away from the AP.
