What sustained upload/download rate are you allowed, or are they even willing to share that?

Nothing is plugged into the RTP 300 - it's connected to the switch, parallel with my other machines.

512kb, burstable to 1mb

OK, well, the Vonage RTP300, if it is really generating that traffic when you're off the phone, seems to have a problem. I can't look at the data rate on my WRT54G, it's not THAT sophisticated, but no blinkies tells me it ain't pulling much. Besides, all my BitTorrents slow down when I start using the Vonage line, so I *know* the Vonage line isn't eating bandwidth until I use it.

Is the PHONE light blinking on the Vonage device? How many phones are hooked in? (I'm just "thinking out loud" now that maybe a wiring issue is making the adapter think it's off hook). Crazy theories... Wink

Having said that, if your ISP is selling you a "sustained" allowed rate of 512kb, then pissing and moaning when you use 1/10th of that.... Wink

The phone light blinks off then back on about every 20 sec. when the phone is not in use.

I did change from a Panasonic cordless to a two-handset Uniden cordless about the time they started complaining.

That's what I'm saying. You are paying for 512k, if they whined because I downloaded 3MB in 30 seconds I'd say so what. Stop being stingy with the bandwidth that I pay for. The Vonage device does send out a register signal every 20 seconds, but this is just a few packets - nothing remotely near as heavy as a phone call. So all this unexplained constant massive downloading, which they won't define, must be coming from somewhere. you know what might be worth a try is cloning the mac address while disconnected from the ISP connection. Clone the mac, then when it's done, reconnect it to your network. see if your ISP is trying to filter based upon mac addresses.

Rule #1 of diagnosis: Whatever changed at the time the problem started, is probably the cause of the problem.

OK, the phone light should be solid, steady, and on. No sneaky blinking! On mine, the INTERNET light blinks, once, every 20-30 seconds. I can't believe I just stared at my WRTP54G for 120 seconds... blue... pretty.. lights... swirling... (smacks self)

Take out the Uniden phone and plug something, ANYTHING, in its place. Preferably a basic phone. Restart the RTP300. See if the constantly-blinking Internet light stops blinking. If it does, you have yourself a culprit.

Here's what you should have, assuming the RTP300 and WRTP54G are the same:

Normal/on hook: Three solid lights (power, Phone, Internet). Occasional flickers on Internet light.

Off hook/not dialed out yet: POWER steady, PHONE blinking steadily, little to no Internet activity.

Dialed out/connected on a call: POWER steady, PHONE blinking steadily, INTERNET blinking away crazily.

Hang up: PHONE and INTERNET stop blinking immediately, go to lit steady.

PS: What is the frequency of the Panasonic vs. Uniden phones?

even with no phone plugged in the internet light blinks about once a second and the phone light blinks off and then right back on every 15 sec or so

No phone AND no patch cable? Sorry, I want to be specific... Just to isolate anything local.

Unplug everything, including power, from the RTP300. Wait a minute for all the little electrons to have a little well-earned rest. Plug in your WAN cable, and your power cable. Power it up. Give it a minute or so to acquire. Do you still get a PHONE light blinking every 15 seconds, and a frequently-blinking INTERNET light?

If so... maybe a factory reset would help. I dunno - someone else with an RTP300 will have to confirm this, but I can assure you that it's wireless-enabled second cousin, the WRTP54G, does NOT do this. Sounds like the device may not be fully convinced that it is on-hook. ???

All I have connected is power and an RJ6 connector to my switch. Not even a phone patch cable.

OK, I'd call CS and explain the blinking light patterns. That doesn't sound normal to me, not that I know jack about the 300's except what I read about here, but I'd say the poor little thing isn't completely convinced it's on hook.

You can try a factory reset on the voice side, can't hurt, but I don't know if it would help. That's found under the "Administration" menu in the router, then "Factory Defaults".

I reset mine this morning to make sure everything was OK after the latest firmware release hit this weekend, and in a vain attempt to fix the one-way audio problem (which turned out to be non-adapter related), and I chose both VOICE and ROUTER.

Any manual settings you have in the device will be gone, of course, but if you're not using it as a router, no biggie there. It'll ask for a username and password, those are "user" and "tivonpw" (EDIT: corrected - thanks ColdGin) respectively. After the reset, the first phone line acquire will take an extra minute or so, maybe, and the PHONE light may come on, then turn off for a while, then on again. Don't panic, and don't pull the plug.

What firmware is that baby running, anyway? I assume they did a release to 1.00.58 on the RTP300 at the same time they did the WRTP54G's (this past weekend).

It's tivonpw, not tivonpc!!!

TI= Texas Instruments VON= Vonage PW = PassWord

get it?

Yeah the phone light should not blink that frequently when you are not on the phone. Maybe very intermittently, but nothing that frequent. I also would like to see what kind of firmware is running on that thing. PM me your acct number I will see what's going on.
