I have had Vonage service for just over a month now with only minimal issues. CID has mostly worked, but when it does not I hear about it. I have received complaints about slowness in the internet performance (I have a WRTP54G as my sole router/phone adapter at this point), especially in terms of some kind of "waking up" delay that occurs when you try to bring up a page the first time.

I believe that Vonage/Linksys will work out the kinks in the WRTP54G and that issues we are seeing now will subside. I may, however, opt for an independent router and just let the WRTP54G handle the phone service. I think this may clear up some side issues I am seeing and will provide some level of independence between my internet, network, and phone performance.

4 out of 5 stars so far for me

My favorite word. Very Happy I'm a software developer and use that term a lot when I have to give a technical description to a non-technical person. Generally makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside like the world things just integrate well with each other with no customizing involved.

I agree with ColdGin in that the way Voip is marketed is that anybody with a thumb can be up and running in just a few moments. I find that very difficult to believe given my abbreviated experience so far.

As to the first, look at some of the recent threads on the WRTP54G. You want to stop using it's built-in DNS server cache and just have it forward DNS information to your other computers.

As to the second, well, what can I say? I was OK with Vonage before I put a real router (WRT54G, with aftermarket firmware) in front of the WRTP54G. After I did it, I like Vonage a lot better. Sound quality got better, impact to my network went down, and no one can screw up my network with a new firmware release but me. Wink The WRTP54G is a fantastic Vonage adapter. As a router? Not so much.

The comments made by NateHoy and ColdGin - I would have to agree with as well. I have had Vonage for almost 4 months now and so far I've been very pleased and impressed, with a few exceptions. The price -- you can't beat! The quality and features yo get for the price -- EXCELLENT! I know a lot of folks here bad-mouth the CS and Tech Support folks, but I've got to say that every time I've called up Tech Support regarding a problem, I've gotten through fairly quickly and I've received very good service. My only problems have been the infamous "no caller-ID" with the last round of firmware releases (I've got the RTP300) and lately I've had problems where my outbound audio was very choppy. With this last firmware release, things have been great all-around. No complaints! Only once have I considered going back to POTS (Verizon) and that was recently with my outbound audio problem, however, that was only because of the frustrations and inability to get the problem resolved. You definitely have to have some patience and technical skills to go Voip. I've been working with computers and networks for the past 20+ years and yes, it's defintely helped A LOT of times. I'm so happy to no longer be with Verizon and having to pay them $73.00 each month. Now, I just pay $27.24 each month. Like the McD's commercials....I'M LOVIN' IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have over 2 years with Vonage now. I have very few problems with Vonage. Most issues are related to the router or the internet service provider. I travel a lot and use Vonage for my home office. Vonage may not be for everyone but with a little technical skill you can make it work. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

We've been using Vonage since December 2004 and have been very satisfied (4 out of 5 stars). While the service has been near perfect most of the time, we've also been patient during the few glitches (i.e. two 2 to 4 day periods of time when the service/VM was down or erratic) knowing that we're saving >$450/yr over POTS.

Like some of the other posters, I'm a bit wary of Vonage's no-nerds, plug and play marketing. Initially configuring our home network took a bit of puttering to get rock solid.

My biggest fear? That the feds/states etc. screw up a good thing with regulations/taxes.

Gotta chime in lol...

After trying to utilize my new cat 5 wiring in the home and not finding the right brain to do what I needed done to link two pcs I had to get a WRTP54G. My RTP300 was flawless and was willing to dive in again on this wireless model as the first (junk blue one) . Well after extreme patience with Vonage peoples and just plain given up mine wouldn't update and launch the phone light, I ate supper and returned and all was done...lmao. Sometimes ya just have to go with it and stay cool.

bottom line since Oct 2004 abouts I been happy with Vonage... they rock!

Call Quality excellent - no line noise. Almost makes you wonder if someone is on the other end when no one is talking.
rt31p2 - no problems at all
customer service - slow, slow, slow. I use it very infrequently.
Vonage forum - it rocks. It feels great to help others and also get help when needed.
I give it 4 stars out of 5 because of CS.

Been a user now for 9 months now. I'd give Vonage 4 out of 5. We will save $600 a year over SBC. The service has been excellent. I have not had any of the CID issues that others have had. VM has been steady. I like the web interface. The one time I had to deal with CS was on my second number transfer. It took nearly three months and it was because of something I screwed up, not Vonage. The rep was more than helpful and pushed through the transfer. I've discovered that running an upload/download and attempting to use the phone - not good. I only have the PAP2 so I can't quite dial in the QoS like some of the other models can. So I just do the up/downloads at night when we are sleeping.

The only thing that prevents my rating from being 5 out of 5 is the E911 issues. I know Vonage is working on it but I don't expect it to be fully operational for sometime. Let's face it, the traditional phone companies that control the lines we need to use to connect to 911 don't want to play because they are afraid of getting their asses handed to them over companies like Vonage. More and more people are switching because they are tired of paying too much money for what some see as a basic service.

Overall - happy we made the move. I've got our office moved over to Vonage. My parents will be moving over in the next month and my in-laws are considering it as well. Plus I have side clients that are now all asking about it and I am openly telling them about Vonage, both the good and the potential bad about it.

When it works, I love it. Been a user for something like around 6 months.

Unfortunately, all to often lately, it just flat-out sux. 2 1/2 stars out of 5. I'll probably keep it, but Vonage is only for the person who is willing to trade the reliability and quality of a POTS line in for a low price and unlimited long distance.
