Hello,
I thought I would post this as a bit of good citizenship and holiday cheer.
Over the last few weeks, I've worked hard to get my Vonage phone working behind my linksys Router (WRT54GX2). The phone worked Great in FRONT of the router, but would cause poor internet connectivity for my PCs...so this option was discarded.
Ultimately, I stumbled on a very simple technique to get everything working. Prior to this fix, my phone calles were plagued with stuttering on both sides.
Here's what you do: 1) Turn everything off. Cable modem, router, Motorola adapter. 2) Turn on the Cable modem. Wait a minute or so 3) Turn on the router. Let it sit for a minute or so. 4) Ok, here's the great trick: Log into the router. Turn OFF the firewall. This step is crucial. 5) Turn on the Vonage adapter (VT1005) 6) Wait a couple of minutes. Pick up the phone and call your voicemail to test it out. It should work great. 7) Log back into the router, and turn back ON the firewall. This isn't necessary, but highly recommended if you want to benefit from the router's firewall.
That's it! I use my phone all the time with crystal clear clarity. It's great. But, before stumbling on this little trick, it barely worked at all.
I hope this has been helpful, and happy holidays!

I propose an alternative solution, somewhat in jest, but it's a proven solution:
1) Return the WRT54GX2 2) Pick up a WRT54G or WRT54GS router 3) Connect every thing up...and that's it. Works right out of the box.

Shawn, thanks for the tip 'though. A LOT of people were having trouble getting the GX/GX2 and Voip to play nicely. Now we know where the problem lies. |

Well said! I bet there's a lot of frustrated folks. I'm glad to have things working, but your alternative solution sounds just as good.
In fact, I needed to buy anotehr phone line for a remote worker - I bought the model you suggested. I look forward to a no-hassle installation.

Shawn, need your help.
I've tried this fix with my WRT54GX2 and have no luck. Even tried the procedure after restoring all the factory defaults. I had upgraded the firmware to 1.01.11. Is this the firmware that you are running?
Any other suggestions? I'm about to give up and return it.
I appreciate any help that you can offer.
Best regards. Steve |

Hey Steve, I'm running the same firmware as you. Since my original post, I determined that it's actually a matter of turning the firewall off and on. All the rebooting and restarting doesn't seem as necessary... Tell me a little more about what problem you are having - poor call quality? No connection? Try turning off the firewall and seeing if you can make a call. Then, if that works, turn the firewall back on and see if things are better.... A co-worker of mine just set up his system with the WX54G and the PAP2 with no problems. If my suggestions don't work, I say return your router for the other model. It seems more fool-proof, and I can honestly say I don't see huge improvement of speed/performace with the SRX.... Shawn |
