PostPosted: Mon Dec 19, 2005 12:32 pm    Post subject: RT31P2 + WoW = which router? Reply with quote Back to top

I currently have the RT31P2. I have two (2) PC's and one (1) WAP connected directly to the RT31P2. I play World of Warcraft. I have some connection issues, but haven't been able to pinpoint it. Many are suggesting getting a different router.

Is there any advantage to putting the RT31P2 behind another router and connecting my machines to that router rather than to the RT31P2? If so, which router performs the best? I was considering the Linksys Linksys BEFSX41, but didn't quite know what they meant by "Note: The DMZ host does not perform as expected when applied to the Phone Adapter. Any help and opinions would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Get a WRT54Gv4 or earlier. Connect the Vonage device behind the WRT. Enable QOS on the WRT for the Vonage device. Connect all PC's (Wired/wireless) to the WRT and go to town!

I already have a wireless access point, so I don't really need a wireless router. Are there any other major differences between the WRT54GP2 and the BEFSX41 that would justify buying the WRT?

From what people say around here, and including my own experiences, the WRT-54Gv4's are by far one of the best routers out there, with regard to price ($50.00?) and firmware compatibility with Vonage. As for the others, if anyone has them, please speak up.

I appreciate your input.

I was checking over at NewEgg. I see there are several different WRT54G models. I am assuming you are referring to this one?

Yes, that's it. You have to be careful on which model you get. Version 4 or before is the one you want, and somewhere around here there's a post about how to look at the numbers on the box before you buy. After you get it, grab new firmware from the Linksys website to enable all the cool QOS stuff. There's also 3rd party software that I heard is really good, but I never played with it before. There's alot of people here who run things like HyperWRT firmware that can tell you more.

I tired searching. Haven't found it yet. You wouldn't happen to have a link would you?

LOL, I was looking too. Very Happy I can't seem to find it, but I remember that a regular person around here posted it, so maybe they could repost it and Mr Conner could lock it? Seems like good info to have around, since it's frequently requested info.

Out of curiosity, and I apologize for beating this horse to death, but if I sould happen to get a newer version number, what sort of problems can I expect?

If I remember right, there are issues with QOS and possibly DHCP. I'm really annoyed I can't find that thread!
