PostPosted: Sun Dec 18, 2005 1:55 pm    Post subject: Frequent and consistent dropping of calls with WRTP54G Reply with quote Back to top

I started Vonage service 3 months ago and encouraged my neighbors to do the same and we are both having consistent trouble with our service. On average about once per five minutes in a phone call either the listen or talk portion of the call goes silent as though it is "buffering". The information below are the specs per the first post for our house:

1. Location - Annapolis, MD
2. ISP - Comcast Cable
3. Upload and Download Speeds - 3.18Mbps down/365kbps up/62% QOS (done with vonage-forum Voip Speed Test)
4. Motorola SurfBoard SB5120 Cable Modem
5. Linksys WRTP54G Voip router (came with Vonage service)
6. Setup: Internet --> CableModem --> WRTP54G Router --> Phone
7. Frequent (~every 5 minutes) dropping of in or outbound portion of call for a duration of ~10-30 seconds each occurance
8. TestYourVoIP results - I have the detailed page saved but it clocked at 4.1 up and 4.3 down with G.711 Codec

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I really want to be a Voip user but won't be able to sustain service if I can't fix this problem.

Sean

I really want to make this work and be a Voip proponent but am struggling for answers. My neighbors have already called Verizon to switch back so I am hoping I can fix both our problems

why does everyone inist on not posting the detailed results from testyourvoip? because they're long? that's one of the most important things you can post.

8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

heck, it's even capitalized.

John,
The answer to your question with respect to posting the detailed test results in my case is that the detailed Voip test page is graphics rich and I don't know how to post that into this string. Is there a persistent link that I can access to the test results or a way to convert them to text? I tried to e-mail the results to myself but the e-mail message arrived blank.

It looks graphics rich, but if you just copy the material below the pie charts and paste it as text, you get all the important detail. At least you do on my setup.

You're getting a lot of packet discards, especially outbound. I suspect you're having ISP issues. Let's see what Reebok has to say about it.

I agree steve. it'd definitely an isp issue.
you can access your modem at 192.168.100.1 and post the values under the Signal page, but chances are they'll be ok. if not though, you have a definite case with comcast. otherwise it's a bit more difficult to get them to understand they have a problem. it would involve such things as getting ww.pingplotter.com and running it for a while trying to see where the packet loss is occuring.

I was having almonst an identical problem. From another forum user, it was recommended I put a "real" router in front of the WRTP54G. This doesn't have to be an expensive piece of eqipment (I used the Linksys WRT54G for $39.99 after rebates).

I have the Vonage WRTP54G connected off port 1 of my new router (goind directly into the WAN/Internet port of the WRTP54G). I disabled EVERYTHING I could find on the Vonage router (firewall, wireless, etc.). I then setup the QoS on the new router for Port 1 to have "High" priority. It has only been a few days, but I haven't "lost" a call yet. I still get a little choppiness if I do something like a speed test during a conversation, so I need to read up some more on tuning the QoS stuff (i.e. set the upload speed to a real number instead of auto, probably create the QoS setting on the device by MAC address instead of on the port, etc.)..

I know this seems to make the WRTP54G useless, as I bought it to consolidate down to 1 box. But adding a new router (which is better than the old D-Link one I used to have) for $40 seemed to be what I had to do to "fix" the problem of lost audio.
