Answer
·  Can I use my computer while I talk on the phone?

Yes.

Most Vonage adapters come with an Internet "passthrough" port or a built-in router allowing you to hook the Vonage adapter to your Internet connection, then hook your computer to the Vonage adapter. Please review the specifications on the device you choose.

Many people also choose to use a separate router, in which case the Vonage adapter would simply become another device on the network.

·  Do I need to have my computer turned on to talk on the phone?

No.

Vonage uses the Internet to make your calls, but it does not use your computer to do so. Your Vonage device contains everything needed to call over the Internet.

All you need to do is plug in a standard telephone (unless you selected a Vonage device that already has the telephone built in, such as the VTech IP 8100) and start dialing like any other phone!

You don't even need to have a computer, just a fast, reliable Internet connection.

·  Must I speak through the computer to use Vonage service?

No. Vonage operates independently of the computer.

You speak through a standard telephone plugged into your Vonage adapter (or, in some cases, the cordless phone built into the adapter).

If you WANT to talk through your computer, Vonage offers an "extra" line called a "SoftPhone", which is a second phone line that works on your computer, and allows you to call any regular telephone from your PC.

·  I have a fax machine. Can I use it with Vonage?

Yes, Vonage service should work with any standard fax machine.

Just plug the fax machine into your Adapter, and fax. The same rates apply, even if you're faxing internationally. In some cases, you may need to lower the baud rate or call Customer Service to have adjustments made to your line that will optimize FAX usage.

Any fax that you make is treated like a standard phone call. So you'll be billed as if these calls were normal calls.

If you need a dedicated FAX line, one is included with the Business plan, or you may purchase one for the Consumer plan.

·  Can I use multiple phones with the phone adapter?

There are four ways to plug multiple extensions into a Vonage adapter.

1. You can purchase a multiple jack extension connector, and then connect it to the phone port of your Vonage adapter. This will allow you to have multiple phones on a single Vonage line.

2. Some Vonage customers use cordless phone systems that come with a base unit and extra handsets. The base station of the cordless telephone plugs directly into the . Multiple handsets can be placed anywhere in the house.

3. You can purchase wireless phone jacks. The base unit connects to the Vonage adapter and the wireless jacks plug into your household electrical outlets. A telephone connects to the wireless jack. These devices are not sold by or guaranteed by Vonage.

4. Some Vonage customers have plugged the Vonage Adapter directly into the existing telephone wiring in their homes. You must disconnect the wires from your regular telephone company into your house first. It is important to precheck the wiring on the jacks to make sure you don't have live voltage on the jacks before connecting them to the Vonage Adapter (this can be easily done by using a line tester such as those that are available at Radio Shack). Be advised that any damage resulting from practices contrary to manufacturers recommendations for the Adapter will not be covered by warranty.

·  What type of telephones work with Vonage service?

Most standard telephones (corded or cordless) can be used with Vonage's service.

Your Vonage adapter will have an RJ11 (standard telephone) jack built in, just like a wall jack in your home. Once you have the adapter configured and connected to the Internet, simply plug in a phone and dial normally.

Vonage is not compatible with PBX or other multistation handsets, or VoIP handsets such as Cisco VoIP telephones. Your Vonage adapter does all of the conversion for you and is expecting a standard telephone to be plugged in.

·  What is the difference between a router and a Vonage adapter?

A router gives you the ability to create a network so you use your DSL/Cable Modem service for both surfing Internet and talking on the phone.

A Vonage adapter converts the analog signal to digital so you can use your Internet connection (a digital connection) to make telephone calls using a standard (analog) telephone.

Some Vonage adapters are also routers (for example, the WRTP54G, RTP300, and WRT54GP2 are all routers with a Vonage adapter built in).

·  What is a router and why do I need one?

If you want to use multiple computers on your Internet connection, or enjoy an extra layer of security while surfing the Internet, you will need a router.

Some Vonage devices come with an "internet passthrough" port, which is a good way to use a single computer with your Vonage adapter on an Internet connection.

If you have more than one computer, chances are you already have a router. In this case, Vonage will simply be a new device on your network, and only requires a wired Ethernet connection on your existing router. You will want a router with working QoS to give your Vonage line the priority it needs to keep your calls clear.

If you don't have a router and you need one, such as the RTP300 and WRTP54G, are already routers in addition to being Vonage adapters.

Keep in mind that the Vonage routers are consumer-grade routers, so if you need advanced networking features, have more than one or two computers in your network, or intend to use P2P or other services that put heavy loads on your Internet connection, you would be well served to select a different router, and get a more basic Vonage device.

In particular, the Vonage routers are not equipped with very strong "QoS", which allows the Vonage line's traffic to be prioritized over regular Internet traffic such as uploading large files or running P2P programs. Good routers include the Linksys WRT54GL (which supports aftermarket firmware), and routers with the Hawking StreamEngine chipset, both of which come highly recommended by various members of the Vonage Forum.

Most likely you can, and many Vonage customers have.

Not all alarm companies support Vonage, Vonage recommends that you keep a basic telephone line to support your home alarm system or contact your alarm company to see if they support Vonage.

Your Vonage line will not operate in the event of a power outage or loss of Internet service.
