Vonage VoIP Forum FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Category: Main -> Vonage System Requirements FAQ

Question
·  What is broadband or high-speed Internet access?
·  Does Vonage DigitalVoice work with dial-up Internet access like AOL or Juno?
·  Does Vonage service work with satellite Internet?
·  Does Vonage service work with wireless ISP networks?
·  I already have a network in my home. Will I be able to subscribe to vonage service and use my existing networking equipment?
·  My PC only has a USB connection. Will the phone adaptor (MTA) fit into my network?
·  Does Vonage recommend specific brands of routers?
·  Will vonage service work if I'm using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) technology?

Answer
·  What is broadband or high-speed Internet access?

High-speed Internet access (also known as Broadband) is a connection to your home that provides fast access to the Internet.

Wired connections include ISDN, T1, Fractional T1, T3, Fiber Optic, Frame Relay, DSL or Cable Internet.  Wireless connections include WiFi and Satellite.

Common brands include Earthlink, Verizon DSL and FiOS, Optimum Online, Road Runner and others.

Most Internet providers' connections are fast enough to support Vonage's service, though the latency (or signal delay) in satellite Internet generally does not work well with Vonage and other Voice-over-IP applications.

Vonage requires at least 30kbps, and recommends at least 90kbps, of low-latency (low delay) bandwidth for acceptable service.

·  Does Vonage DigitalVoice work with dial-up Internet access like AOL or Juno?

While some people have reported success using a dialup provider, by setting the Vonage "Bandwidth Saver" to 30kbps, dialup connections generally do not provide enough speed to support Vonage.

In order to use dialup with Vonage, you would have to have a computer dial the Internet using a standard modem, then "bridge" that connection to a Vonage adapter using an Ethernet networking card.

While this connection is technically possible, it is unlikely to give you acceptable service.

·  Does Vonage service work with satellite Internet?

Possibly, but not very well. The high latency, or delays, inherent in satellite Internet will make for long delays, assuming a connection can be made.

Your satellite provider will need to provide an Ethernet connection for you to use Vonage, or you will have to bridge a connection between your computer and your Vonage adapter.

·  Does Vonage service work with wireless ISP networks?

Yes, many Vonage user's have wireless ISPs and report excellent results, though as with any Internet connection you will want to test it first.

Your wireless service must provide an ethernet (wired) connection that the Vonage adapter can plug into.

If your Wireless ISP does not provide an wired ethernet connection, you may be able to get a router or wireless bridge capable of logging into your Wireless ISP (as a Wireless Client) and converting the connection into a wired ethernet port or ports.

·  I already have a network in my home. Will I be able to subscribe to vonage service and use my existing networking equipment?

Vonage will integrate with most networks very easily as long as the Vonage device has open access to the Internet.

Simply plug the Vonage adapter into any Ethernet port in your network that can access the Internet with open connections. There is no need to specifically forward ports to the Vonage adapter, it will make standard connections like any of the other computers on your network.

Note that some corporate firewalls "close" certain ports, or prevent those ports from being used to access the Internet. In order to function properly, Vonage adapters need open access to the Internet.

·  My PC only has a USB connection. Will the phone adaptor (MTA) fit into my network?

Ideally, you want to convert your connection type to ethernet if possible and select a Vonage adapter that has a built-in router, or purchase a separate router.

If this is not possible, it may be possible to use your computer as a bridge between the USB Internet connection and a wired Ethernet card in your computer.

·  Does Vonage recommend specific brands of routers?

Vonage has tested and certified that the following brands and models support Vonage broadband telephone service:
2Wire 100
Linksys BEFSR41
Linksys BEFSR81
NETGEAR FR314
NETGEAR RP Router
NETGEAR RT314
NETGEAR RO318
D-Link DI704
SMC Barricade

Vonage-Forum users tend to recommend:
Linksys WRT54GL combined with aftermarket firmware known as "HyperWRT Thibor" or "DD-WRT".
Any router equipped with the Hawking StreamEngine chipset.

·  Will vonage service work if I'm using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) technology?

ICS is the technology that allows you to use your computer to connect to the Internet and "share" the connection with your Vonage adapter using an Ethernet card built into the computer

This has been used in a number of the examples above, and should work in most cases, but it is not the ideal method. Ideally, your Internet connection should be capable of providing a wired Ethernet connection.
