Answer
·  Is Internet service included?

Vonage does not provide Internet service. Vonage uses your existing high-speed Internet connection to make and receive telephone calls.

·  Is this cell phone service?

No, this is telephone service over a high speed Internet connection.

·  How many phone lines can I have?

You can have as many phone lines as you want as long as your high-speed connection can support them. Each phone line requires both upload and download bandwidth available to operate.

It is possible to select the bandwidth requirements yourself by using the bandwidth saver option in your web account. The default setting will require 90kbps of upload and download bandwidth for each Vonage line you use simultaneously. Bandwidth saver allows you to reduce this to as low as 30kbps.

·  Does Vonage provide 911 service?

There are three types of 911 calling available on Vonage. The type you get will depend on the availability of 911 and routing at your local emergency center. You can determine the type of 911 service at your number by dialing 933 on your Vonage line:

  • E911: When you dial 911, your telephone number and registered address is sent to the local emergency center assigned to your location.
  • Basic 911: Calls will go to a local emergency operator, but they will not have your call back number or your exact location, so you must be prepared to give them this information.
  • Vonage Call Center: If you don't have access to basic 911 or E911, your 911 call will be sent to the Vonage national emergency call center. A trained agent at the emergency call center will ask for the name, telephone number and location of the customer calling 911, and then contact your local emergency center.
A working Vonage line requires an Internet connection and electricity to power your adapter. You can increase the chances of your Vonage line working when you need it by putting your Internet modem and Vonage adapter on an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and having a telephone hardwired to the Vonage adapter (or putting your cordless telephone base on a UPS as well). This will provide service for a while in the event of a power loss, and also help protect your equipment from damage due to power spikes or surges.

Further information on Vonage and 911 can be found at the Vonage 911 page.

·  Can I keep my current phone number with the vonage service?

Click on "Sign Up Now". Select Keep My Existing Number and click continue Input your current phone number and click continue. If your number qualifies for transferal, you can continue through the order process. If not, you will receive a message that the number cannot be transferred.

At the end of the sign up process, please download the Letter of Authorization ("LOA"). Complete and sign the document. Fax the LOA as well as a copy of the first page of your latest phone bill (no more than 30 days old) from your current carrier to 1-866-281-3308. Please check that the billing name on your Vonage account matches the name used with your current carrier.

Upon receipt of the document, Vonage will contact your current carrier to begin the process. Ideally, the transfer process takes approximately 15 business days from the time Vonage receives your documents. After Vonage receives permission from your current carrier, they will email you when your phone number has been transferred.

It is not necessary to contact your carrier to disconnect your service. The disconnect will take place when your phone number is transitioned to Vonage. Phone numbers that have pending change or disconnect orders with the current carrier cannot be transferred to Vonage.

In the meantime, Vonage will ship the equipment to you and assign you a temporary so you can start using your service.

Alternatively, you may choose to simply set up your new Vonage service with a Vonage-supplied telephone number. This will allow you the opportunity to "try out" Vonage for as long as you like while maintaining your old service with your old phone number.

When you are ready to switch completely over to Vonage, simply log into your Web account, and select "Change My Phone Number" under "Billing". This service will cost an additional fee, but will allow you to maintain your old service while you test Vonage (and, if Vonage does not work out for you, simply cancel it and your old line is still there).

NOTE: If you are a DSL subscriber, you may need to keep your current phone service to maintain your high speed Internet connection. Contact your DSL provider for details on this.

·  What happens to my service if I move?

Nothing. You take your adapter with you and hook it up to your new Internet connection. Your phone number remains the same. Remember, your Vonage service will work wherever as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection.

Of course, should you elect to change your phone number, or add a new number that is local to your new home (while keeping your old number), Vonage can do either of these for you.

NOTE: Please update your Vonage 911 information as soon as possible after you complete your move, so Vonage knows where to route your 911 calls!

·  Can I take my phone adapter with me when I travel?

Absolutely.

You can take and use your Vonage service wherever you travel as long as you have a high-speed Internet connection. Your phone number remains the same, wherever you are.

NOTE: If you will be taking your Vonage adapter with you for an extended period of time, please consider to updating your Vonage 911 address.

·  Does the person I am calling need to have the vonage service too?

No, you can call anyone you like. Vonage works just like a regular telephone service. Just pick up the phone and dial.

·  Does Vonage have toll free service?

Toll free numbers are now available to everyone for only $4.99 per month (price subject to change, see the Vonage Home Page for updated pricing).

A Vonage Toll Free Plus number lets your incoming caller call you at no charge from anywhere, anytime. 100 incoming minutes are included every month and each minute after that is only 4.9 cents.

Your Toll Free Plus number will ring on any of your Vonage phone lines. As with all calls made or received with Vonage, there are many free features unique to the Vonage service that will help make your life more convenient.

Toll Free Plus is a Virtual Number, so all calls will ring through to your primary Vonage line.

·  How do you dial Internationally?

To dial internationally (except to Canada and the Islands listed below), dial 011, plus the country code and then the number.

To call Canada and the Islands listed below, simply dial the 11-digit phone number. Note: International calls are billed on a per minute basis. The rates are included in the International Rate Table on the Vonage home page.

·  Will I be listed in the telephone book if I switch to a Vonage number?

No, Vonage phone numbers are not listed in the telephone book.

You will also not be issued a telephone book when you join Vonage. Vonage offers a fee-based 411 service, or you can use any one of a number of telephone number lookup services.

·  What is a router and why do I need one?

To use Vonage and your computer at the same time, you may need a router in your network. The router will allow you to use your Vonage service at the same time that you surf the web.

Some Vonage devices have a router built in, and some have a "passthrough" port that allow you to plug your computer in. For details on the current devices available, see the Vonage home page.

·  Does vonage support 3-way calling?

Yes, Vonage does support 3-way calling. On most adapters, you simply press the FLASH key (or hang up momentarily), dial a number, and hit the FLASH key again once the second call is connected to enable three-way calling. All parties in the call will then be able to talk to each other.

However, 3-way calling is highly dependent on having sufficient bandwidth for the duration of the call. You need double the normal bandwidth to make a 3-way call.
