Vonage VoIP Forum FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Category: Main -> Vonage and 911

Question
·  How are 911 calls handled over a Vonage line?
·  What is E911? Is it available in my area?
·  I am concerned about 911. Can I test it? How?
·  Can I trust Vonage to handle my 911 calls?

Answer
·  How are 911 calls handled over a Vonage line?

When you join Vonage, you will be asked to provide a 911 address.  It is critical that you enter this information into your Vonage account as soon as possible.  This information will assist Vonage in routing the call to your local emergency center or to the Vonage National Emergency Center.

There are three types of 911 calling available on Vonage.  The type you get will depend on the availability of 911 and routing at your local emergency center. You can determine the type of 911 service at your number by dialing 933 on your Vonage line:

  • E911:  When you dial 911, your telephone number and registered address is sent to the local emergency center assigned to your location.
  • Basic 911:  Calls will go to a local emergency operator, but they will not have your call back number or your exact location, so you must be prepared to give them this information.
  • Vonage Call Center:  If you don't have access to basic 911 or E911, your 911 call will be sent to the Vonage national emergency call center. A trained agent at the emergency call center will ask for the name, telephone number and location of the customer calling 911, and then contact your local emergency center.
Further information on Vonage and 911 can be found at the Vonage 911 page.

·  What is E911? Is it available in my area?

E911 works very much like traditional landline-based 911 service. With E911 service, when you dial 911, your telephone number and registered address are sent to the local emergency center assigned to your location, and emergency operators have access to the information they need to send help and call you back if necessary.

It is important to register your 911 address with Vonage as soon as possible, and to change it when you move or relocate for any period of time.

You do not have to take any special action (other than registering your address) to get E911. If it is available in your area, it will be turned on automatically.

E911 is not available in all areas. To find out what types of service are available to you, call 933 from your Vonage telephone line. It is also a good idea to test 911/E911 from time to time after arranging the test with your local authorities.

·  I am concerned about 911. Can I test it? How?

  • First, check your local laws to make sure that testing 911 is allowed.  Most states allow it, and some even encourage it.
  • Next, call your local police station on their non-energency number and ask about setting up a test.  They will most likely direct you to the non-emergency number at your local Emergency Center.
  • Follow any instructions given to you by the Emergency Center or local police station to set up a test.
  • During the test, have the following questions prepared:
    • Do you see my name and telephone number?
    • Are you the proper emergency center for my address?
    • Is there anything special I need to do or say when calling 911 from this number?

·  Can I trust Vonage to handle my 911 calls?

Vonage has put a great deal of effort into making sure that 911 works as well as possible.  Vonage is, however, slightly different from a "landline" telephone company.  A working Vonage line requires an Internet connection and electricity to power your adapter.  There may be occasions or emergencies where your Vonage line might not operate.  Of course, the same is also true of your traditional phone line (if the wires are down) or your cell phone (if you cannot get signal or the tower is down).   No single connection will be up 100% of the time.

You can increase the chances of your Vonage line working when you need it by putting your Internet modem and Vonage adapter on an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and having a telephone hardwired to the Vonage adapter (or putting your cordless telephone base on a UPS as well).  This will provide service for a while in the event of a power loss, and also help protect your equipment from damage due to power spikes or surges.

It is always wise to have a backup plan, though.  Most states support the use of "911" dialing on cell phones, even if the cell phone does not have active service with a cellular company. Check your local laws (or call your local police station's non-emergency number) to see if this is true in your area.   Some areas also require the local phone company to maintain a dial tone with 911 capability at each residence, whether that residence is subscribed to telephone service or not.
