Answer
·  What is Vonage?

Vonage is a VoIP telephone company. Details on the company, their available plans, and other questions about Vonage may be found at their web site .

·  Can I transfer my telephone number to Vonage?

Probably. Vonage makes it easy to check. Simply go to the , click on the "Availability" link, and enter your existing phone number into the provided field for an instant answer. During the signup process, simply tell Vonage that you want to transfer your number. Vonage will issue you a temporary number to use until the transfer is complete, then they will send a request to your existing telephone company. When the transfer has completed, your temporary number will be disabled.

Remember that you will need to keep your current telephone service active and paid up while the transfer is in progress. Don't cancel your old service until the transfer completes, or you may lose the number!

An alternative is to sign up for a new account with a new number, then transfer your existing phone number as a new "Virtual Number" later. This will allow you to try Vonage out for as long as you like while maintaining your existing phone number with your existing company. Note that This will cost you slightly more (a the setup fee (currently $10) plus a monthly charge (currently $5) for the Virtual Number - prices subject to change, and are listed on the Vonage web site). Once the transfer starts, it is difficult to cancel, so it's a good idea to try Vonage out for a couple of weeks on a newly-issued number until you decide it is right for you.

If you start with a brand new number, then decide Vonage is not for you, you can simply cancel your Vonage account and continue using your old service.

·  How do I change my phone number?

Vonage offers the option to change your Vonage phone number yourself! Please login to your web account and visit the Billing Section. From there simply select "Change Your Phone Number" and follow the steps to change your number. Please note that there is a fee (plus applicable tax) for this feature.

You can choose to keep your existing number as a Virtual Number, delete your old number immediately, or create a voicemail greeting informing your family and friends of your new number for one week.

·  How does 911 work with Vonage?

There are three types of 911 calling available on Vonage. The type you get will depend on the availability of 911 and routing at your local emergency center. You can determine the type of 911 service at your number by dialing 933 on your Vonage line:

  • E911: When you dial 911, your telephone number and registered address is sent to the local emergency center assigned to your location.
  • Basic 911: Calls will go to a local emergency operator, but they will not have your call back number or your exact location, so you must be prepared to give them this information.
  • Vonage Call Center: If you don't have access to basic 911 or E911, your 911 call will be sent to the Vonage national emergency call center. A trained agent at the emergency call center will ask for the name, telephone number and location of the customer calling 911, and then contact your local emergency center.
A working Vonage line requires an Internet connection and electricity to power your adapter. You can increase the chances of your Vonage line working when you need it by putting your Internet modem and Vonage adapter on an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) and having a telephone hardwired to the Vonage adapter (or putting your cordless telephone base on a UPS as well). This will provide service for a while in the event of a power loss, and also help protect your equipment from damage due to power spikes or surges.

Further information on Vonage and 911 can be found at the Vonage 911 page.

·  Are incoming calls deducted from my minutes?

No. If you are on the a limited rate plan, incoming calls are not counted against your minutes.

Calls to other Vonage subscribers (even if you place the call) are also not counted against your minutes.

·  How do I get multiple phone lines?

To get multiple lines, you must open multiple accounts.

At this time, Vonage does not offer a package for multiple phone lines or a discount for multiple accounts.

Most Vonage adapters can handle two lines, so if you need a second line, you can simply activate the second port on your existing Vonage device, or get a new one. The choice is yours.

Note that if you just need an extra number, without actually needing a second telephone line, you may want to consider a Virtual Number.

·  Can I use multiple telephones with the phone adapter?

There are four ways to plug multiple extensions into a Vonage adapter.

1. You can purchase a multiple jack extension connector, and then connect it to the phone port of your Vonage adapter. This will allow you to have multiple phones on a single Vonage line.

2. Some Vonage customers use cordless phone systems that come with a base unit and extra handsets. The base station of the cordless telephone plugs directly into the . Multiple handsets can be placed anywhere in the house.

3. You can purchase wireless phone jacks. The base unit connects to the Vonage adapter and the wireless jacks plug into your household electrical outlets. A telephone connects to the wireless jack. These devices are not sold by or guaranteed by Vonage.

4. Some Vonage customers have plugged the Vonage Adapter directly into the existing telephone wiring in their homes. You must disconnect the wires from your regular telephone company into your house first. It is important to precheck the wiring on the jacks to make sure you don't have live voltage on the jacks before connecting them to the Vonage Adapter (this can be easily done by using a line tester such as those that are available at Radio Shack). Be advised that any damage resulting from practices contrary to manufacturers recommendations for the Adapter will not be covered by warranty.

·  What area codes do you have available?

To see the current list of Vonage area codes, go to the and click on the "choose your area code" link.

·  What is VoIP?

VoIP stands for Voice-over-IP. It is a technology that allows you to use any broadband Internet connection to make telephone calls.

In the case of Vonage, this is done without using your computer. Vonage supplies you with an adapter that allows you to plug in a standard telephone handset. Your handset works just like it does when connected to a regular landline telephone company, and calls can be made to any telephone in the world.

·  How does the Refer-A-Friend program work?

Refer-A-Friend is Vonage's way of thanking customers for their business and helping them share the value of Vonage with their friends. The program works very simply. Vonage customers can refer their family, friends and associates by placing their email addresses in the Refer-A-Friend icons on our website. Once someone has been referred, an email is sent automatically to the referral telling them about the benefits of Vonage.

The best part of Refer-A-Friend is that both you and your friend get big savings. You get a credit applied to your next billing cycle for each friend that elects to sign up for Vonage. What's more, your friend also gets a credit that is applied to his/her second billing cycle once they have selected Vonage.

Refer-A-Friend is a great program for everyone. The more people you refer, the more you can save.

Refer-A-Friend does not apply to Vonage service purchased at retail stores. Your friend must purchase the service from your referral for both of you to get credit.

·  How long does it take to get service started?

Once you sign up for service, Vonage setup generally occurs within a few hours, and often within minutes.

If you purchased your Vonage adapter at a retail store, you can begin using it as soon as you get your acknowledgment email.

Vonage-supplied equipment is shipped pre-configured and you can use it as soon as it arrives, which generally takes a few days to a week.

·  Does my computer need to be on to use Vonage?

No.

Vonage uses the Internet to make your calls, but it does not use your computer to do so. Your Vonage device contains everything needed to call over the Internet.

All you need to do is plug in a standard telephone (unless you selected a Vonage device that already has the telephone built in, such as the VTech IP 8100) and start dialing like any other phone!

You don't even need to have a computer, just a fast, reliable Internet connection.
