When was the last time a fast food sandwich looked like the one in the ad? Do you really think that four lenders are fighting to get your business?
Do you know what the number 1 strategy is for retailers competing with big box stores is? Customer service.
If you want lowest price, go with the big guy (Vonage). If you are looking for better service or more features then you will have to pay a premium. You don't get both.
The reason there is more (or more perceived) whining (or complaining) in the technology sector is that there is typically something you can do to correct things yourself. If there was an active WalMart user forum they might include electronic store directories to help you find things, people in a MacDonald's user forum might share tips for the ingredients to add to a meal to make it better.
So while I agree with your sentiment that it is not about giving up, I disagree that it is related to pushing back against technology.
