both the caller phone number AND the caller name can be passed along with the rest of the call stream by the "customer", i.e. the point of origin of the call. It is true that Verizon customers have their information stored on Verizon's servers, but many CO's will allow business customers to provide for their own caller ID and name. This involves rather fancy equiptment... more than what your average phone set will do obviously.
Sure, right now, you really only see that kind of functionality being used by business customers... like call centers, etc... But the ability to allow the call's origin to set both the ID and name is there.... Its just that none of us probably have $500,000 in customer contact telephoney systems and and a Avaya phone switch sitting in our basement.
Vonage's allows some rather unique capabilities. Its up to Vonage to provide both the caller name as well as the number of origin. They could allow customer's to set their ID and name on the web page and have it stick almost instantly.
Of course, that opens up a whole world of legal issues.... which is why I would assume that this kind of ability is limited to business customers...
