I know a company who offers a very cost effective internet fax service. They can even unify your telephone, fax machine and Internet connected PC. Good if you have business because they have good reinforcement in your communication.Internet Fax Service

When I want to send a diagram (not a text file) to someone, ask him to sign his name to it and send it back to me, how, exactly, do I do this using email-to-Internnet-fax? I suppose I could get a scanner (at both ends of the connection), scan the document, attach the scanner's output file to an email message, and send it, and have the correspondent print it, sign the hardcopy, and then perform the same three-step process to return it... but a fax machine is quicker, cheaper, and easier for non-techies to use.

I use internet faxing too - Faxaway for incoming and Interfax for outgoing.

I have a question for all of you. How does one send fax to a telefax (a nondedicated fax machine; you have to call, speak to a human to ask for &quot;fax tone&quot;) using internet faxing? Many of the international fax numbers I have to send fax to do not have dedicated fax machines. Is there an internet faxing service that includes a &quot;recorded voice&quot; - i.e., the internet fax side detects the physical fax is not giving a fax tone, recorded voice butts in with &quot;fax tone please,&quot; the internet fax side resumes sending fax once it detects a fax tone.

<title>Broadview security system stopped working</title>

I have been using Vonage with my Broadview (formerly Brinks) security system for around 5 years now with no problems. Recently however, I can't get my security system to connect.

About a month or so ago I ran a standard communications test from my security system and it came up failed. Unfortunately I haven't been testing as reliably as I should so I can only say that the previous successful communication was back in January of this year when my in-laws inadvertently tripped the system.

Obviously something has changed either with Vonage or with Broadview this year. Unfortunately after speaking with both parties, neither believe anything has changed that would affect my service.

Has anyone else experienced changes in service (specifically with a security system) lately?

I have verified that I can use the &quot;regular&quot; phone service via my Vonage connection (i.e. I can place and receive voice calls). I can see in my &quot;dashboard&quot; that the call is going out and appears to last 1 minute exactly.I have even lifted the handset of a phone during the security system test and I can hear what sounds like old fashion pulse dialing so I'm assuming this means that the call is connecting and the security system is trying to communicate with the call center.

I have verified with Vonage that my packetization is set to 10 and has not changed. Are there other settings I need to check?

Finally, just to be complete, my ATA sits between my cable modem and my router on my network so there shouldn't be any router issues.

Thanks!!!

I purchased a 2-line triplex adapter to connect to my cat5 jack. I can hear tone from L1 with a handset on L1,L2, but only hear open air when listening for L2 in L2 and the handset on L1,L2. I only assumed if it L1 is internally crossed to the L1,L2 port that L2 would be as well, but this doesen't appear to be the case. I can't see any of the photos for the sticky when logged in anymore, so I can't tell if I'm using the correct type of jack, any possibility he's using a cat 5e line jack splitter vs. a telephone line splitter?

You don't have to pay to have a technician rewire your house unless you are unable or unwilling to do it yourself. Your alarm panel has two telephone line connections (one wire-pair on each of these two connections). It has one side which is intended to be connected to your outside line. The other side is intended to be connected to your house wiring. It normally connects the two together, allowing the devices connected to your house wiring to use the outside line. When it wants to send an alarm (or a test) it opens this connection, thereby preempting your telephones and other devices on the house wiring, and taking over the outside line. By backfeeding your house wiring from your Vonage device, you are feeding dial tone to the alarm panel on its inside rather than its outside telephone connection. When it opens its internal connection to send an alarm or a test, it loses the dial tone.

You can solve the immediate problem by connecting the other side of the alarm panel (which was connected to your outside line) to the inside wiring. This will enable the alarm panel to send alarms (and tests) but will not allow it to preempt other telephone devices.

To restore the preemption functionality of the alarm system, you should feed your Vonage dial tone to the outside connection of the alarm panel, rather than backfeeding it through the house jacks.

If you understand this and can follow these directions, then you do not need to pay an outside technician to do it for you.

Hello Guys,

I am new to Vonage and new to the forum. I have a problem also with my alarm system. I use brinks and when I had it install it was done with an ATT line. I changed to Vonage and now have the trouble light on and the beeping from the panel. I am Back feeding the Vonage line to the house using a wall jack that I do not need. i disconnected only one of the ATT cables from the outside of the house so i wouldn't have their dialtone kill the Vonage dialtone. The problem is that when I try to do the test it fails to do it. Brinks tells me that I have to pay $90 for a tech to come out and reprogram the system and install some hardware to work with Vonage which is more $$$. Does anyone knows if I really have to do that??? Because I hardly use the phone in my house and if i have to pay for Brinks to come out I preffer to pay ATT $13 a month to have a land line and cancel the Vonage service all together. I would love to keep Vonage but not if I have to give more money to Brinks. They let me down with their customer service and support.

<title>Using a dialup modem with Vonage</title>

Modem over VOIP

This is a late post, but I have been trying to connect a modem over VOIP (a regular Vonage line, not a Vonage Fax line) for about a week and was finally able to do it last night. I double checked that it still works this morning - just to be sure that I wasn't delusional last night after a frustrating weekend messing with this stuff.

To be quite honest, I think that the solution consisted of several small changes that I had to make. I hope this helps someone, because I was pulling my hair out for a week trying to get dial-up over Vonage.

My setup:

- Regular Vonage VOIP line

- Roadrunner (Tme Warner Cable) internet connection

- Cable modem connected to LinkSys broadband router with two phone ports

How I got it to work:

1. After reading several forum posts (from all over the place, not just the Vonage Forum) it seemed to be the consensus among some experts that you could not get an internal fax/modem to work over VOIP. I'm not sure of all of the technical reasons, but I certainly couldn't get mine to work.

2. I started searching for external modems that people had used over VOIP, and stumbled upon this USB modem and the comment by L. Lupton with the title &quot;Works on VoIP and Win XP just fine!&quot; Off I went to Micro Center and picked one up for about $50.

3. I logged in at Vonage and under the settings area, increased the line quality to the max setting.

4. At the back of my router, I have a line filter that I had left over from an old DSL connection - not sure if it helps or not, but I figure it can't hurt. It's plugged directly into the router, and then has two ports - one for phone/voice and one for data. I tried to plug the line from the modem into the data port, but it wouldn't work. So, I plugged a phone line splitter into the phone port, and then the modem into one of the ports. I plug my home wiring into the other port. (Note: At first I had my modem plugged into the home wiring further away/downline from the router, but couldn't get a &quot;handshake&quot; from the dial-up location. I had to connect my modem as close to the router as possible - probably to cut out a lot of interferance in my home wiring).

5. Before I bought the new external modem, I had downloaded a &quot;Dialer&quot; from Roadrunner that lets you choose a location to dialup to. During the installation process, it installed a dialup script (see below). Using the dialer never helped my internal modem, but under the Properties for my Dialup Connection (in Control Panel - Network Connections) and then under the Security Tab, Interactive Logon and Scripting area, the &quot;Run Script&quot; box is checked and the location points to &quot;C:\Program Files\Roadrunner_Dialup_Internet\icc\login.scp&quot; script. This may be standard stuff, or maybe just something that Roadrunner requires - I have no idea.

The script looks like this:

proc main

    string prefix = &quot;aolnet/ent.&quot;
    string UID = prefix + $USERID

    waitfor
	&quot;ANSNet&quot; 	then DoANSLogin,
	&quot;Login:&quot; 	then DoPPPLogin,
	&quot;sername:&quot; 	then DoDirLogin,
	&quot;% Username:&quot; 	then DoPRLogin
    until 20

    DoANSLogin:
        waitfor &quot;login&quot;  until 5
	if $SUCCESS then
	    transmit prefix + $USERID, raw
	    transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	    goto DONE
	endif

    DoPPPLogin:
        transmit UID, raw
	transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	waitfor &quot;Password&quot; until 5
	transmit $PASSWORD, raw
	transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	waitfor &quot;&amp;gt;&quot; until 5
	transmit &quot;ppp&quot;, raw
	transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	goto DONE

    DoDirLogin:
	transmit UID, raw
	transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	waitfor &quot;Password&quot; until 5
	transmit $PASSWORD, raw
	transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	goto DONE

    DoPRLogin:
	waitfor &quot;% Username:&quot;  until 20
	if $SUCCESS then
	    transmit UID, raw
	    transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	    waitfor &quot;Password&quot; until 5
	    transmit $PASSWORD, raw
	    transmit &quot;^M&quot;
	    goto DONE
	endif

    DONE:
        delay 2
endproc

6. I added &quot;*99,&quot; to the phone number of the dialup location. This is supposed to tell Vonage to use the highest quality line, which I had already done, but it may also affect some other line settings as well.

7. I turned off &quot;Enable Modem Error Control&quot; and &quot;Enable Modem Compression&quot; on the modem configuration screen under my connection properties. (At first I also scaled back my modem speed to 9600, but later put it back to 115200 and it doesn't seem to make any difference).

8. When I tell the modem to connect, it starts the dialup process. A dialog box appears that says &quot;Dialing *99,xxx-xxx-xxxx&quot;. Then it says &quot;Postconnecting through [script name]&quot;. Then it verifies my username and password. Then registers my computer with the server.

9. The modem connects at 46.6 Kbps.

I have noticed that some dialup locations (Hunstville, AL for example) seem to be more buggy that others (Dallas, Kansas City), but Roadrunner has a large enough network of servers/dialup locations that it doesn't matter for my purposes.

My internal modem still does not work with these changes.

I hope this helps somewhat. Good luck.
