Broadband Monitoring of Home Alarm Systems

Check out NextAlarm at nextalarm.com. They have a Digium Broadband Adapter for $119 to allow them to monitor your home security system over your broadband connection... Sounds like the thing to do for those of us who have done away with land lines. Monitoring is $14.95 per month paid monthly, or $8.95 per month paid one year in advance ($107.40). Even with buying the broadband adaptor, that's cheaper than what I can get from Brinks or ADT, assuming they can use my other existing equipment (which they probably can).

Another option is the ADT cellular backup to phone lines for an additional $8 a month...

Thank you first of all to all those members who have shared such useful links here

Credit card processing with VOIP

There are lots of merchants either switching to or thinking about switching to VOIP. Before you do, read this. You can get VOIP for your business BUT you still need a TRUE ANALOG phone line to process your credit card transactions. I head up technical services for a credit card processor. We have gone through this about 12 times with a few of our merchants. I have been in contact with the major companies that make the credit card terminals, (Verifone, Lipman, Hypercom, Ingenico) They have all confirmed that transactions will fail on VOIP systems. As you know, VOIP drops packets of data all the time. They are so small that when you are talking on the phone, you don't notice it. With credit card transactions, if 1 packet of data is dropped, the transaction will eith fail, or you'll get a rejected batch. You can not configure a terminal to work like a computer, they don't have the technology built in them. So, whatever anyone tells you...Make sure you still reserve 1 TRUE analog line for your credit card processing. Please e-mail me with any questions. You may not be a merchant of mine, but I can still help.

I would also look into Credit Card Processing by Switch. for your VOIP. They have great customer service and good rates.

I've just about given up trying to fight with my HP all-in-one fax machine.
Bob

Find out the model number on the device you have, so you can do a search on here for recommended changes on settings.
You can find the owners manual online - it should have info on how to change settings.
Or... do a google search for [b:9f0d358e09]free fax[/b:9f0d358e09] to send online.

I've just about given up trying to fight with my HP all-in-one fax machine. I need an all-in-one machine to send faxes. I receive by efax, so no need to answer the phone.
Any recommendations on all-in-one (or I guess even fax-only) machines that are known to work with Vonage?
Thanks,
Bob

Access Control/Gate System intergration question

I have an Aegis 4000 gate system that is connected to my 2nd home phone line. I wanted to move it over to my Vonage line but It didnt work when I tried. Has anyone had some experience working with a access control system using the Vonage line?

The gate system is connected to the same pair just like the telephones are. The gate rings the handsets with a distinctive ring. We can communicate to the intercom through the phone and press the "9" digit to open it.

Thanks for your help.

If you are running a analog only (dial up) credit card terminal on a VOIP system, your transactions are not in the guidelines of PCI compliance.

Dial up ONLY terminals do not encrypt transaction data being sent for authorization/settlement. When a dial terminal sends transaction data over VoIP, full credit card track data is sent in the clear over the internet.

Not only is this not PCI compliant, but users will start to experience authorizations issues and settlement issues with their terminals.

Any merchants switching to VOIP should consider upgrading to an IP based terminal or long-range wireless terminal to become PCI Compliant.

In my moments of contemplating hari-kiri, I had a moment of brilliance...

I didn't have a phone cable with only 2 wires that was long enough. I did have some short ones and a whole bunch of DSL filters (that only used to 2 center wires) that I wasn't using (I would expect that a female to female coupler with only 2 wires would work as well) and I connected the long 50ft 4 wire phone cord to the filter and the short 2 wire to the fax and VOILA...I have dialtone on both ports and the fax works!

So basically Fax---short 2 wire cord---dsl filter---long cable connected to phone jack on filter---vonage adapter.
