<title>VTA-CV through vpn</title>

Well, I posted about this half a year or so ago.

I moved to a country where the sole ISP blocks voip traffic, so had to get a VPN account from a provider and route the calls through them. this is how I did it.

I signed up with the VPN provider, who sent me a link to download their encryption software. It's important to stress here that I needed to use a SSL-VPN because I needed to disguise my packets because the ISP would recognise it to be voip and block it, so I had to encrypt - and if this is your situation too, you will need a SSL-VPN, not just a regular VPN.

OK, so you've got your vpn, your adapter and an active internet connection, here comes the tricky part. You need a pc with two network cards, it can be either 1 wireless and 1 wired, or 2 wired, whatever works for you. I have one wireless (for my home network, and thus internet access) and 1 wired.

Connect your adapter via ethernet cable (a cross-over cable is required for this, its NOT a regular network cable, buy one from a store and ask for help when getting it). Name your adapter-connected network connection &quot;Internal Network&quot; and your internet access connection (Wireless in my case) &quot;External Network&quot;. Next up, install your VPN software, and label that connection &quot;Vonage&quot;. Then tell your computer to share the &quot;Vonage&quot; connection via Internet Connection Sharing, or ICS. Start up your TUN/TAP adapter (which is your ssl-vpn software) and let it connect, then your &quot;Internal Network&quot; should connect to the net via the VPN connection, which in turn uses the &quot;External Network&quot; connection to hitup the internet.

This information took me liturally weeks to figure out, and is one of 2 main solultions to this problem that I found. The other, more expensive solution was to get a hacked WRT54 router and use the router to make the VPN connection. However, I must stress, that a regular VPN connection, opposed to a SSL-VPN connection, may not work for you. All ISP's in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman block Voip traffic, and to get around it, you need SSL-VPN, regular VPN wont solve your problem.

Hope this helps you.

<title>Questions about using a Vonage V-Portal with Airport Exteme</title>

I am wondering with the new V-portal it can go in front of the router. (eg: ADSL Modem -&amp;gt; V-Portal -&amp;gt; Airport Extreme Base Station. I am wondering if anyone has hooked up this way and has any voice quality issues. As this type of connection would free up one of my lan ports that I could definately use.

Currently I am using a VTA adapter connected to a Dlink DIR-655 with QOS options set up in the DLink so that call quality is not an issue even with heavy bandwidth usage. I am looking to move to a Airport Exteme but want to make sure there are no issues before I layout that kind of cash.

Thanks

Hello.
I use the VPortal and plug it into my AirMacExtreme. Very easy to do and the AirMacExtreme plugs into my ADSL box from my provider.
What exactly are you looking to do?
What can you tell me you have done?
I do use mine only at home but I wonder if I were to take it to a wireless hotel? Problem is that I need a LAN connection to make it all work.

Let's explore this more.

Yea, always start with &quot;cancel&quot; ..and they will ask why. You can proceed to state the reason. Most of the times they will try to work something out and keep you happy!

I am thinking of using the new Vonage V-Portal with my Airport Extreme. I would like to place the Vonage adapter in front of the AEBS but have the AEBS still act as the router and the V only act as a Voip adapter. Does anyone know if it is possible to have this done in the settings on the adapter?

I currently have the DLink VTA and find that when behind the router I can run into call quality issues when there is heavy network traffic.

Thanks

<blockquote>Right --- how about the truth ... we don't buy enough bandwidth because we know our customers can't get a hold of customer service to complain. And they can't get ahold of customer service to discontinue their service.</blockquote>

I totally agree. I was having the same problem all the time especially when calling number where I would be saving money! On numerous occassions, I have resorted to either using my mobile phone or BT phone because Vonage lines are busy. Here is a summary of my experience:

I joined Vonage because it seemed to a good deal. In reality, for many of the countries I wanted to make free calls to, Vonage lines were always too busy. So much so, that I ended up using my landline.

Also, call quality was very bad that when I made business calls, people asked me if I was using VOIP. Its so embarassing when people say things like &quot;I can't hear you clearly, are you using VOIP line?&quot; I was well annoyed and wanted to end my service.

I contact Vonage and they persistently encourage me to stay offering discounts and refunds for their admittedly inadequate service.

In my personal opinion, there customer service helpline is a con. Customers feel secure knowing that they can easily get through and speak to a person on the line. The staff are sales orientated customer services people. From my experience, they are very well trained in retaining customers.

They kept telling me it there was a temporary fault and as a good will gesture, they would refund me some of or give discount on my line rental. They were desperate to keep me on something, even offering a £2.99 package which you don't see on their website.

Vonage spend too much money on staff to retain customers as its cheaper than improving their VOIP service.

I said that I wanted to close my account and I was more than happy to pay the disconnection charge as their service was ruining my business.

I definitely would not recommend Vonage. I am much happier paying BT line rental and using other services like Alpha, at least they are reliable.

Who cares if its cheap. Its actually very expensive as most of the time, it doesn't work!

Vonage - get your act together. I will try your 30 days trial again in 6 months times to see if the service has improved. However, I very much doubt it.

I think Vonage has discontinued this item. If you do get a hold of it you can use it in place of your vonage adapter. Just remember you can only have one device per account in use at a time.

A free alternative is Vonage Talk, use a laptop with internet connection, head set and microphone (or built in) when you travel.

Just a note this will take you to the Alpha Vonage site which means all these products are free to use, but are in a trial state, no phone support for them.

Vonage WiFi Phone

Hello. Is there anyway I can buy this phone and use the same number I already have with my V-Portal or is that a new account?

It is a great idea for people who travel a lot and I wonder if this phone is only sold in the UK and not in Canada?

Thank you! :-D
