Unless there is something wrong with the phone, it should work fine. My guess is you have a cable problem. The cable shouldn't be that expensive. I'd go that route first.

Do a full reset on the 2420 first. Then try again. Make sure you are using the correct cord for line 2. What type of cord are you attaching to it with?
