All that site does is send an email to number@provider, which is why it only works for U.S., Canadian, and a few foreign providers (and why you have to know the provider to send the message).
As has been said, this is not an uncommon problem, and not unique to Vonage, and not even to VoIP. It's just part of the whole number-portability morass.
