'Smart' Home Featured In Spring Event

April 17, 2004

By Rachel Pleasant

It's not floating in space or kept tidy by a talking robot, but the home of Billy Harrison is likely as close to an episode of "The Jetsons" as anything in Polk County. The home, a 3,500-square-foot marvel of modern technology built by Hulbert Homes, sits at 5643 Hillview Court in the Grandview Landings subdivision off Gib-Galloway Road in North Lakeland.

Nicknamed The Harrison Manor, it's the first home of its kind to appear in Polk's Parade of Homes. It will appear in the $310,001 to $340,000 category in the Spring Parade, which starts today and runs through April 25.

Called a "smart home," everything from lighting to pool temperature, from security cameras to the sound system, can be controlled. Commands can be sent from one of five touchscreens in the home, a personal digital assistant or personal computer -- or any telephone in the world.

Harrison, president of Commercial Communication & Imaging of Lakeland, a company that sells and installs all the equipment featured in his home, says the technology provides two major benefits.

First, because he can control the thermostat and lighting from anywhere, he can keep his electricity consumption in check.

"Because of longitude and latitude, the house knows when the sun sets. So the outside lighting turns on," Harrison said. "Plus, I've got it programmed so that when I leave, all the lights turn off and the A/C goes up. That way I don't have to go through the house and turn everything off by hand."

Second, because he can monitor security cameras from all areas of the house, or from just about any place, for that matter, Harrison can always keep an eye on his two young daughters.

"Even as they get older, the system will alert me when they come home from school. That's a nice feature for safety because I know they're there," Harrison said.

Other talents of this house include a programmable nightlight that can go from bright to dark over the course of 30 minutes -just enough time for the kids to fall asleep.

Motion detectors strategically placed through the home make lights switch on when someone enters the kitchen, foyer, family room or master bedroom.

Harrison said 97 percent of the home's lighting is automated.

The house is divided into six different zones for purposes of heating and cooling -- so Harrison can chill out in the living room but his wife can be nice and cozy in the bedroom.

A central vacuum system makes keeping the house clean a cinch.

But perhaps the most impressive gizmos and gadgets are those dedicated purely to entertainment.

On the second story of the house is a private theater built around a 92-inch screen. Seven speakers create surround sound and the crystal-clear images are beamed on the screen by a projector mounted to the ceiling.

The theater, chock full of electronics -- a DVD player, a receiver and Xbox among them -will also double as a studio for Harrison, who records Christian music.

A digital music server sends melodies through the house. Because it's also divided into four zones, personal musical preferences can always be satisfied.

Thirty speakers have been placed throughout the four-bedroom, three-and-a half-bath house.

Two of those speakers are two feet tall and are located behind the walls in the home's foyer. Though the speakers are covered by drywall, the sound is remarkably unmuffled.

"Our kids are home a lot and we like to be together at home. I wanted to give my kids something and somewhere to be. I want them to want to be here," Harrison said of the entertainment features.

Despite all the impressive technology in the house, Harrison likes to tell visitors that he's not even running a phone line to his house. Just when confusion sets in, he explains that his phone service will be provided through a service called Vonage, which uses a high-speed Internet connection.

Total retail price of all the equipment in Harrison's home is about $100,000.

In the years to come, Harrison may upgrade his home to include even more technology. The kitchen is pre-wired for such space-age appliances as a refrigerator built around a computer screen for digital notes and reminders of milk expiration dates, which some companies offer.

"But that's a little too much for me right now," Harrison said.

The home, which is sure to be a highlight for Parade-goers, is also a welcome addition for the Parade organizers.

"The Parade is a great way for builders and vendors to showcase these appliances and features but it's also an education for the community," said Jennifer Roberts, the PCBA's director of membership and special events.
