Internet Phone Service Battle On: Second Firm In Market Likely To Be Forerunner Of Many

April 16, 2004

By Peter Wilson

The digital dukes are now up in the Vancouver and Victoria Internet telephone marketplace.

A second company, Vonage Canada, has joined Primus Canada in the battle to win the hearts, minds and high-speed Net connections of cutting-edge phone users in the two cities.

On Wednesday, Vonage Canada, a subsidiary of New Jersey-based Vonage Holdings Corp, announced it was offering Voice over Internet Protocol service (VoIP), starting at $19.99 for 500 minutes of service to anywhere in Canada and the United States.

VoIP, which means the transmission of phone calls over the Internet, is now felt by its proponents to be a mainstream-ready product.

Vonage is the largest Voip company in the U.S. with 140,000 customers.

Competition should heat up further in the next year as the major phone companies, including Telus and Bell Canada, and the big cable providers, Shaw and Rogers, are expected to join the fray.

Shaw will likely make its Voip debut later this year. Also expected into the market by the end of 2004 are Toronto-based Yak Communications Inc and AOL Canada.

Already the regulation of Voip has become a contentious issue with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, with hearings scheduled to run May 19-20.

In early February Primus Canada was first into the Vancouver and Victoria markets with a $19.95 price for unlimited local Voip calling -- offering, as well, a chance to switch your home phone number to their service.

Primus, the subsidiary of Virginia-based Primus Telecommunications Group, recently announced the addition of 911 emergency service in its 15 current markets, something Vonage doesn't yet have. Both companies have similar unlimited Canada/U.S. long-distance calling bundles that include such features as voice mail, call waiting and caller ID.

Vonage is also rolling out in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Winnipeg and expects to be in 15 markets soon.

Vonage spokesman Louis Holder said his company came into the Canadian market because of this country's broadband penetration and what he termed pent-up demand for VoIP.

He added that, like Primus, Vonage would be offering home phone number portability and 911 emergency service within the next two months.

Andrew Day, Primus Canada's senior vice-president for residential services, said that his company had foreseen the arrival of competition.

"The expectation is that if it's a hot market, unfortunately, you're not going to be alone in it for too long," Day said.

He said, however, that competition will simply mean more publicity for Voip and will result in an expanding marketplace.

In a related development Canada's major telephone companies, including Bell Canada and Telus sent a letter Wednesday to the CRTC asking for changes in the timeline of arriving at a decision about regulation of the Voip space.
