Gift Ideas For College Graduates: Spring 2004

April 6, 2004

By Steven Rothberg

Three times a year, the staff of reviews a wide variety of products and services to help visitors to our site know which they would they would most like to receive as gifts from their families and friends. Ranked in no particular order, our favorites this spring were:

1.Vonage telephone service, which leverages the power of your existing broadband Internet connection. With more than 100,000 total lines on its network (doubling its subscriber-base in less than five months), Vonage provides low-cost, flat-rate, feature rich calling solutions. Plans start at $14.99 for 500 minutes of local, toll and long distance calling throughout the United States and Canada. Included services include voicemail, call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, call return, call hunt, call transfer, caller ID block, repeat dialing and international rates such as $0.05 per minute to the United Kingdom and $0.06 per minute to Australia.

2.While Vonage provides great phone service at incredible pricing, you're still going to want a great phone. Look no further than Plantronics. For convenient hands-free mobility and superior sound clarity, you'll love the CT12 2.3 GHz cordless headset telephone. Its ultra-compact dial pad fits in the palm of your hand and features an integrated belt/clothing clip.

3. If your like most college graduates, then your primary phone may very well be your cell phone. If so, then you'll love the Plantronics MX150 mobile headset for its ability to deliver superior sound quality with flexible grip design that makes it stable and comfortable to wear.

4.Perhaps you were using your phone to make vacation plans. If so, you're going to want the right bags and luggage for your trip. I love the design of High Sierra Sport Company bags. If you're taking your laptop, take it in their AT214 Computer Day Pack. Its main compartment loads form the top and has a padded computer pocket, drop-bottom lower compartment for shoes or folded shirts, a front accessory pocket with an organizer and CD headphone port, a zippered accessory pocket on the top lid, backpack straps, water bottle pockets and more. Another great bag for computers is the 5454 Sonic, which can be worn either as a backpack or courier-style bag. For everything else, you'll want the AT249 26-inch wheeled upright. It offers space for a suit, packing cubes for organization and pockets for airline tickets and newspapers. Fantastic.

4.If your vacation includes camping, then you're going to want to include in your plans Bruton, a leading manufacturer of innovative instruments for outdoor adventure. The newest addition to their line of camp stoves is the Optimus Crux, which combines the ease of canister butane use with compact style and durability. Weighing in at only 3.1 ounces, it is perfect for day trips, multi-day treks or extended expeditions.

Their Liberty is the world's first mantle-less lantern, which takes the worry out of dealing with traditional lanterns and their fragile mantles. The Liberty, which weighs only 8.3 ounces, instead relies on a durable platinum element to gather and burn fuel.

A great stove and lantern are super, but won't help you find your way to or from your destination, but the ATLAS will. This GPS unit features mapping capabilities, points of interest, expandable memory and is customizable to fit your needs. It is incredibly accurate because it receives both GPS and WAAS signals. The ATLAS features an Easy Mode that is perfect for helping you get from points A to B and back again and an Advanced Mode that allows you to ascertain your latitude, longitude, altitude, travel time, speed, etc. Built-in maps of the contiguous United States and Hawaii are included and you can add more maps by plugging in one of a number of MapCards. Very slick.

5.Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Suunto X3HR, a watch that includes a heart rate monitor and an altimeter so that you can measure your body performance and environmental data to get the best out of your training. The altimeter functions make Suunto X3HR particularly well suited for sports in variable terrain, such as running, mountain biking and hiking. Compact, lightweight and stylish, Suunto X3HR has high visual value and can be used as a regular wristwatch.

6.Hopefully you captured some of the memories from your trip by taking pictures. If so, then you're going to love Shutterfly, a leading online photo service. Upload your favorite snapshots to Shutterfly and they'll develop and send your photos back to you as posters ranging in size from11 by 14 inches ($7.99) to 22 by 30 inches ($22.99)! I guess you just ran out of excuses for displaying that generic poster from the campus bookstore.

7.While a poster-sized photograph of your trip is fantastic in your home, it isn't exactly convenient to carry around. Memory Maker's new photo bracelets are a unique way to share favorite photos with others. Six miniature frames display family photos, vacations, vintage heirlooms, best friends, boyfriends, pets - the possibilities are endless.

8.Perhaps your love of the outdoors doesn't extend beyond the city limits. If so, then there's a good chance that you've played golf.

Whether you've played a few times, occasionally or frequently, you'll definitely be familiar with the cliché that practice makes perfect. But who has time to golf 18 holes several times a week, and hitting balls at a driving range can be so monotonous. If it weren't for the risk of breaking windows or killing your neighbors, wouldn't it be fun to hit balls in your backyard or neighborhood park? Now you can with the entirely new "off-course" golf ball from almostGOLF. One-quarter the weight of a regulation ball, the almostGOLF Trainer ball will respond to your golf swing with a limited-distance, true-ball flight and feel, sailing over 100 yards with remarkable accuracy while being safe to use in parks, schoolyards and even backyards. Incredible.

9.When you get ready to hit some balls, be sure to dress properly. Roche Sports, a leading manufacturer of high-tech activewear, makes a wonderful soft-collar Polo shirt that eliminates ride-up of the waist and pulling at the shoulder. The Microfiber Roche Motion Short Sleeve Half Zip is great for any active sports because it looks great while being incredibly comfortable. The fabric is lightweight, breathable 100 percent Microfiber with a silk-like texture. It offers complete wind protection and is finished with a water-resistant treatment for moderate rain protection. If only it was lightning resistant then you'd be all set.

10.Protection from wind and rain is important when you're golfing or getting any other kind of exercise, but so is protection from sweating. AXE makes gels, solids and a deodorant bodyspray that young men use all over their bodies to keep them smelling great all day. Not only is it the most popular young men's deodorant brand in the world, it even has its own board game: Essence.

11.If your love of fresh air doesn't extend to the outdoors, then you should be in the market for an air cleaner. IQAir's HealthPro Plus is the only air cleaner to pass EN 1822 certification, which is the world's most stringent filtration test. It was chosen by the Hong Kong Hospital Authority as the only air cleaner powerful enough to be used in hospitals in the fight against SARS. Stiftung Warentest, the prestigious European testing organization, chose the HealthPro Plus as the best air cleaner in the world. What more can be said?

12.Had enough of exercise and fresh air? Want to relax at home for a while and have something to eat or drink? If you're like most college graduates, the time has come to replace your garage sale quality plates and mugs with something nicer, maybe even something meaningful. Riverdale Avenue Design's plates and mugs might be perfect for you. They're called Hexagrams, which are symbols from the 3,000 year old text called I CHING. This ancient Chinese system is a philosophy brne of the unalterable, external laws of nature, and it provides eloquent guidance as we face the challenges of our continuously changing human condition. The plates and mugs are produced in China of pure white porcelain, are microwave and dishwasher safe, and each features a hexagram painted in black exactly as they appear in the I CHING. Strikingly modern, they fit into any décor.

13.Those seeking a different kind of inspiration may appreciate inspirational gift products such as gift books, book and Bible covers, daily inspiration items and home décor items. Inspirio is a great source for all of these items, including wooden frames with silver accents "Class of 2004" and a gift book inspoired by the New York Times bestseller "The Purpose-Driven Life," which was created just for recent graduates.

14.Okay. So you've had some fresh air, something to eat, and are inspired. Time to get some work done. If you're looking for a fantastic color printer, then you need to check out the HP 2510. Not only does it print in color, but also copies, scans and faxes in color at up to 4,800 dpi. This all-in-one printer/copier/fax can be shared by up to five computers via a traditional printer cable or (are you ready for this?) your wireless home network. That's right. This is a wireless color printer/copier/fax machine. Awesome.

15.A printer, of course, needs paper. If you're going to print photographs, you're going to want to have Printasia paper on hand. Incredibly, it has the same look, weight and feel of real photographs. It's ideal for those who want to scrapbook and frame their digital images.

16.Moving those digital images from your camera to your computer to your printer requires good lighting for your computer work area. The Eclipse Executive Computer Light has a patented indirect glare-free lighting technology and ergonomic design help reduce eyestrain, and it is energy efficient so you also won't have to strain your wallet to use it.

17.If you're planning to scan into your computer not your photos but instead information from books, newspapers, magazines, faxes, letters, spreadsheets, etc. and would like to see the words and numbers entered in your favorite application right where your cursor is, then you're going to love the IRISPen Executive. It works just like a highlighter. Slide the pen over printed text and numbers and they are automatically re-typed in your application at up to 1,000 characters per second at accuracy rates up to 100 percent!

18.While creating that document, chances are you'll need to consult a dictionary, thesaurus, calculator or clock. The Executive Desk Companion by Franklin Electronic Publishers combines all into one convenient device that also contains a temperature senor, eight word games and a built-in crossword solver.

19.When that document is all finished and ready for your signature, sign it with style. The Pilot Pen Vanishing Point is available in black, blue, red and green barrel colors with attractive rhodium or gold accents. Its ingenious push button mechanism, twist converter and pocket clip make this fountain pen the most technologically advanced available on the market.

20.Now that your work is finished, it is time to kick back and enjoy yourself. But wait, don't head away from your computer just yet. You can have lots of fun at your computer. If you enjoy chatting on the Internet, listening to music, playing the latest PC game, or using voice/speech applications on your PC, digitally enhanced USB PC headsets from Plantronics provide the ultimate in sound quality and speech recognition accuracy...with no sound card required.

21.Make your computer even more fun with Mutant Mods, a complete line of computer parts and accessories that add a splash of originality and a dash of color to computer workspaces. You'll change your beige and boring computer equipment into a head-turning conversation piece with light kits, LED fans, cold cathode tubes, internal cables, fan guards, EL wires and much more.

22.Quick: how many music CDs do you own? Dozens? Hundreds? What a pain. Wouldn't it be great if you could turn your CD collection into an easy-to-access MP3 library? Now you can. In one day. Get Digital puts your music on recordable DVDs or other storage devices capable of storing approximately 100 CDs, which can then be used by home, portable, and automotive devices including MP3 jukebox products and personal computers.

23.If you've had enough of your computer and want to party, then you'll want to visit your local Spencer Gifts store where they have hundreds of gift and party ideas. Want just one example? Laser One creates huge laser images on walls or ceilings. Black light responsive, it works with your favorite music for the ultimate interactive audio-visual experience -- includes wireless sound responsive technology. A professional laser light show experience. . . at home!
