Radio Beat: KIRO-AM Is Tops In Fall Rankings

Vonage In Print News

January 22, 2004

By Bill Virgin

Without baseball to boost ratings, KOMO-AM wasn't able to hold on to the top-of-the-market spot it claimed in summer, slipping to a tie for ninth in the fall quarterly rankings released this week by The Arbitron Co.

KIRO-AM, which had lost the Seattle Mariners contract to KOMO-AM, was the top station among listeners 12 and older tuned in Monday through Sunday 6 a.m. to midnight, according to Arbitron. It narrowly edged out country station KMPS-FM.

They in turn were followed by KUBE-FM, KRWM-FM and KBKS-FM (tied for fourth), KCMS-FM and KING-FM (tied for sixth), KWJZ-FM, KVI-AM and KOMO-AM (tied for ninth), KZOK-FM, KBSG-FM, KMTT-FM, KISW-FM and KNDD-FM (tied for14th), KTTH-AM, KPLZ-FM, KQBZ-FM and KIXI-AM (tied for 18th), KJR-AM, KYPT-FM, KLSY-FM, KJR-FM, KYCW-AM, KAYO-FM and KFNK-FM (tied for 25th).

KIRO continued its hold on the critical morning-drive market, winning the 6-10 a.m. weekday segment, according to Arbitron. KOMO continued to improve, climbing from a tie for eighth in summer to sixth in fall. One other interesting shift in mornings; KNDD, which lost the Andy Savage show and briefly tried a team imported from Portland, slumped from 11th in summer to a tie for 19th in the autumn book.

KIRO also claimed first place in middays (10 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays). KTTH, which took the Rush Limbaugh program away from KVI (although Limbaugh was out for much of the period for drug rehab), jumped from a tie for 19th in summer in that time segment to a tie for fifth in fall; KVI dropped from second to 10th.

KMPS won the 3-7 p.m. weekday segment; KOMO, which had been first in summer on the strength of Mariners lead-in, fell to a tie for ninth. KUBE topped the list for 7 p.m. to midnight. KOMO, a runaway winner in summer, got a share that was a quarter of its summer audience.

The trends to watch in the winter book will include the competition between KNDD and KRQI (the former KYPT) in the classic alternative music format, and how much momentum a full quarter of Limbaugh brings to KTTH.

The ratings cover commercial stations, and do not include non-commercial stations such as KUOW-FM and KPLU-FM, which command significant audience shares in the Seattle-Tacoma market.
