U.S. Troops Stationed In Iraq

Just The Sound Of Your Voice
Corporations Team Up To Bring Round-The-Clock Free Phone Service To U.S. Troops Stationed In Iraq

January 12, 2004

By Michelle Tyrell

U.S. troops stationed in Iraq face hardships every day, and the loneliness caused by separation from friends and family is a constant companion. Reliable, secure phone service is available only sporadically, and even then it can be prohibitively expensive. Some troops report paying $25 a minute to call home on a satellite phone. And while Internet access is available, many report that it is extremely slow. There are phone banks in Kuwait, but for troops stationed in remote areas or on the front lines the nearest secure telephone call may be 200 miles away. Now, a cadre of U.S. corporations is pitching in to address the problem. Led by SkyFrames Inc., Vonage and Motorola's Canopy™ division, the Freedom Calls Foundation is providing modern communications equipment to the troops.

The solution is a convergence of satellite, wireless, and Voip equipment and services that allows even troops on the front lines to hear the voices of family members for free.

It All Started With an E-mail In mid-August, Edward Bukstel, executive vice president of SkyFrames Inc., received an e-mail from a sergeant stationed south of Baghdad. In the e-mail, the sergeant said the men and women in her unit sometimes went weeks without speaking to their families. "The e-mail just hit me in the gut and I thought we had to do something to help out," Bukstel says. "So I called friends in the industry and other companies to inquire about getting donations for sending over some equipment for this particular unit."

Shortly afterward, Bukstel received another e-mail from the sergeant's superior asking for three systems with wireless connections so they could communicate with remote locations, as well as 45 Voip lines. "What transpired over the next few weeks was a series of e-mails and phone calls by me and others at Vonage, SkyFrames and Motorola," Bukstel says. "Through a grassroots effort, we're at the point where we have commitments for more than 1,000 laptops and satellite gear that will support up to 10 [military] units, and we have subscriptions for Voip telephones and other associated equipment that would also support video conferencing." $5 Million and Counting Bukstel says up to 3,000 troops and their families will be the beneficiaries of all this technology, which is provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. "I've tried to calculate some of what's out there," he says. "The dollar figure on the gear is in excess of $5 million, and that's a conservative estimate."

SkyFrames provides the satellite communications and integration components, Vonage supplies subscriptions to its Voip service, and Motorola's Canopy division provides the wireless capabilities for communicating between telephones that may be 15 miles away from a satellite terminal. Corporate contributors of goods and services include FedEx Corp., HP and many others [see sidebar]. The companies are committed to providing the equipment and services for at least a year.

If U.S. troops still are in Iraq after a year, the Freedom Calls Foundation is committed to providing communications services for as long as possible. John Rego, chief financial officer at says the companies enjoy the chance to support the troops. "We have people who work in this company who are there," he says. "It just makes us feel good to be able to do something like this."
