Needham & Company Growth Conference, Day Two

Vonage In Print NewsNeedham & Company Growth Conference, Day Two

January 8, 2004

By Harry Newton

Today's Column

8:30 AM Thursday, January 8, 2004: Dinner. Theater (The Retreat from Moscow). House guests. Move those little fingers this morning. Got to get back to the show. Needham & Company Growth Conference, Day Two. Three more "big" themes from yesterday:

+ Power management is hot. You want more life from your cell phone or your notebook. Chips that manage battery power are useful, in fact, indispensable.

+ Semiconductors are definitely recovering. Demand is picking up strongly Prices, which have plummeted in the last couple of years, may start to move upwards this year, helping the bottom line of semi makers bigtime.

+ The telecom industry is coming back. The big growth is broadband. Before you rush out and load up on telecom stocks, know it's still hideously hard to make decent money selling telecom service. The Wall Street Journal writes this morning about the recent runup in telecom stocks and concludes, "But nearly all agree that the industry remains a dismal place to make a buck, meaning the rally could be short-lived." For more click here.

The hottest presenter was Vonage Holdings, the Voip company, which is not yet public, but is clearly up for sale. 250 analysts were hanging off the wall to hear its slick president (I'm jealous), Jeffrey Citron. Vonage started at 5 PM. By 6 PM, a couple of hundred analysts were still hanging off the wall. The story is simple: Cheap phone service (see first chart) with neat free features (see second chart). Look at the $34.99 a month plan. Unlimited calls anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. Curiously, I came home last night to my monthly bill from Verizon (VZ). They charged me $35.25 for one month which included a few local calls but NO long distance (I have another carrier for that) and no features -- like voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, call forwarding, repeat dialing, call return, and on-line call records (where you called and who called you) which Vonage bundles for free. Better yet, you can take your Vonage box with you anywhere (including Europe) and have your friends dial you locally in the U.S. Vonage, here I come.

The major reason Vonage is so cheap is you don't pay all those irksome surcharges and tax you see on your monthly landline phone bill. Vonage is not a phone service. It's an "information service." At least for regulatory purposes and at least for now. Some technical points: To sign up, you must have broadband Internet service. Vonage uses 80,000 bits per second of your broadband line -- not much if you have a cable modem. It pays just under a penny a minute to terminate your phone calls on the standard dial up network. Cisco provides much of Vonage's telecom equipment. Quality is good, mostly. I'm signing up today.
