Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 5, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest..

First, some good news. Early this morning, we passed 47,000 Members on the Vonage Forum. And hey, guess what, we started the Vonage Forum exactly five years ago today!

Now as to our 47,000'th Member, that is tarabatth. Welcome to the Vonage Forum, tarabatth! We're looking forward to reading your posts!

As for today, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about dropped signals, and the other thread has to do with security settings for a router used with the Vonage service. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Vonage Forum Member herman106 begins a Vonage Forum thread which has as its title, Service interruption phone in use or dropped signal.

To begin this thread he has started, herman106 wrote this post:

"I have trouble with my Vonage service. I have what I would call a open carrier or phone in use signal on a frequent basis. I have tried several things including purchasing the newest and latest Vonage box. I would like to continue with Vonage but I cannot have this service interruption.

Reviewing this info gives fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56 the information he felt he needed to offer this follow-up response post:

"You have great speeds, but your QOS (quality of service) is terrible. I see that your jitter score (server to you) is 8.3 ms. This is probably where the QOS problem lies.

Are these consistent and have you checked to confirm (different sites have different results).

If they confirm, I would contact your ISP about this."

Also coming to this thread with some input is fellow Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G, who has a somewhat different take on herman106's test results:

"His jitter score of 8.3ms is not the cause of his low QoS score. His low QoS score is probably due to the variance in his download speed when the download speed portion of the test is being run. Try running the forum VoIP speed test again and notice if your download speed stays consistent or if it varies to a great degree. If your speed starts at 8Mbps but finishes at 5Mbps your QoS score will be low. On the other hand if your speed starts at 14.5 Mbps and stays consistently in the 14 Mbps range your QoS score will be high.

Are you using your home wiring with your Vonage device? You should contact Vonage tech support about the issue you're having in regards to your statement about having a phone in use signal on a frequent basis if the phone is not actually in use. Your ISP is not at fault from the results you have posted."

How do I change my WEP key? (RTP300) is a new Vonage Forum thread that has been begun by Vonage Forum Member Exxtol. And by the way, "WEP" means Wireless Encryption Protocol.

Exxtol writes:

"I've been trying to figure out where the heck do i change my WEP key?!! I have no problems signing on to the configuration page when I'm connected directly to the router via ethernet cord. BUT the problem is when i get there I dont know where the page to change the WEP is. I've looked at Security Settings, Admin settings etc. and I cant find it anywhere. HELP PLEASE. I'm using the rtp300 router by the way."

The first reply in this thread comes from Vonage Forum Member sethook.

Sethook wrote:

"Isn't the rpt300 a wired router? WEP is used on wireless routers where others have access to it via the airwaves."

Exxtol then answers:

"Truthfully I'm not sure. I did not buy it, my landlady did. She has a comcast modem I believe and then the RTP300, which I'm assuming is the wireless router. Oh sorry about using "help" didn't read that. Small print bad on my eyes. Anyway does anyone know where I could go in configuration after I've reset my router to change the WEP? Can't find it anywhere."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member tophtml then answers as he writes this:

"WEP encryption is only utilized on wireless routers. Since the RTP300 is not a wireless router there is no facility for any encryption, therefore there is no encryption supported, therefore you will not find it anywhere in the router's web page.

And tophtml refers Exxtol to this link:

Exxtol replied in this follow-up post:

"Thank you for your response.

For some reason my MacBook (laptop) asks for a WEP password every time I try and connect to the linksys router. Also, in the past I have utilized some type of password and have subsequently been allowed access to the wireless connection. Do you have any idea what WEP "password" my laptop is asking for?

I should also add that sometimes my MacBook automatically connects to the internet connection.......I don't know this is so crazy. Any other suggestions?"

Now, based on the info posted on this thread so far, tophtml feels comfortable writing a follow-up post in which he explains his conclusions.

"Must be a router in range of your laptop, but it's not the RTP300," tophtml writes. "Maybe it is your neighbor's AP which he, recently, secured. Knock on some doors and find out."
