Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

March 3, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest..

As for today, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one seeking router recommendations, and the other thread we shall come to know about today is about a specific question about QoS (Quality of Service) Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

New Vonage Forum Member Merchie begins a thread with a question as its title: which wireless router should I buy?

"My Linksys WRTP54G no longer works and I need to buy a new one," Merchie writes. "Should I buy this model again or is there a better wireless router if so give me the make and model number and where I can buy one."

Vonage Forum Member xizie424 writes, "we are using netgear and it seems to be doing ok."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member Arthur_lw then adds this:

"I have an Actiontec MI424WR supplied by my ISP and it's a honey. My Vonage D-Link VTA handles only phoning and is plugged into one of the Ethernet ports on the Actiontec, while said Actiontec handles all the rest (i.e. connecting with and communicating over the 'net for the Voip device and computing).

http://www.actiontec.com

While that particular model is designed for fiber solutions, you should find something in that group that will do the job for you."

Now how about we talk about this Vonage Forum thread that carries the title of, QoS using Snort as Detection Mechanism. The thread has been brought to life by Vonage Forum Member hidden72.

Kicking this thread of his off, hidden72 writes:

"I had the hardest time getting good quality of service for my Vonage line while downloading data at the same time. The issue finally got bad enough that I did something about it. I've rigged Snort to detect when I start a Vonage call, and it triggers some pretty aggressive rate limiting on the rest of my data traffic - leaving plenty of headroom for Vonage. When the call is complete, the rate limits are released and full access to the bandwidth is restored.

I call this Application Aware Triggered Quality of Service (AATQoS). Anyone who is having QoS problems and is looking for a different way to go about getting better prioritization should check it out. I've created a full how-to with the details here:

http://www.xmission.com/~hidden/aatqos

My particular setup uses the pfSense firewall distribution and the rate limiting happens in a Cisco router... but I don't see why this couldn't work with other firewall/router combinations - the overall process remains about the same."

Again we find a contribution from Arthur_lw :

For those non-technical folks among us there is the Linksys OGV200 Network Optimizer for Gaming and Voip to maybe consider. I don't own one, so can't vouch for its reliability. Maybe there are folks who are familiar with it on here. Tiger currently sells it: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2074984&CatId=584

That's what's hot about Vonage today. Check with us for our next edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.
