Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.. 

As for today, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one about the VTech phone having difficulty with the Vonage router, and another thread having to do with setting up an SSID via a Linksys router. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum 

Vonage Forum Member mk1 has chosen to open a new Vonage Forum thread called,  VTech phone - "extension in use" - no dial tone.

He writes two posts, in which he describes his issue then follows up with his test results:

"Past few days, we've had sporadic problems where my VTECH wireless phones, plugged into my Vonage WRTp54g router, all display "Extension in use" and I have no dial-tone. The wireless internet part of the router is working fine. I've power-cycled the router -- even reset to factory defaults and reconfigured -- but still the problem. My mom's in the hospital in another state -- I really need this phone line back. Any suggestions?"

Now for his test results:

No other phones in the house to test with, unfortunately, but here's the requested information:

1. Your location
North Georgia

2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
Comcast cable

3. Upload and download speeds
Not sure, but sufficient and unchanged

4. Modem make and model
Motorola Surfboard 4200

5. Type of Vonage adapter used i.e. RT31P2 or PAP2
Linksys WRTP54G

6. Setup of Network i.e. Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
Internet -> Modem -> Linksys WRT54G (wireless disabled) hard-wired to modem and to -> Linksys WRTP54G. I use 2 laptops - one cabled to WRT54G, and the other wireless to the WRTP54G. Phone is a VTech (unknown model but base model is plugged into WRTP54G, other nodes wireless to base). No other phones in the house.

7. Issue you are experiencing i.e. dropped calls, choppy audio etc
"Extension in use" sporadically (but increasingly) displays on all phones and no dial tone.

8. Run this Voip Test:

Speed test statistics
Download speed: 1608976 bps
Upload speed: 361896 bps
Quality of service: 22 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 544 ms
Average download pause: 10 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 31 ms
Average round trip time to server: 127 ms

VoIP test statistics
Jitter: you --> server: 3.1 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.8 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.1 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 2.5 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 6
Estimated MOS score: 3.5"

I notice here that Steve48 has been monitoring this thread. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with. I'd suggest checking this thread for any updates.

Now we go to another interesting Vonage Forum thread. Set up by Vonage Forum Member bbowden, this one happens to be named, Setting up new SSID with current Linksys Business Router.

And bbowden wrote,

"I have had some issues with me new Vonage service. The quality is just ok and every once in a while calls will break up. I currently have cable modem running with a 10 meg plan. Just purchased a linksys business class router WRV 200, was told that was good router for Vonage so I could set up a separate SSID. Not sure why I would even have to do this because I was told Vonage does not take much bandwidth. 

"The Vonage and 2 laptops is all I have running off the router. I set up the SSID just for the Vonage not real sure I did it right. How to I make sure the Vonage is really pulling bandwidth from that SSID."

Fellow Vonage Forum Member brian188 offers this advice to bbowden:

"SSID or Service Set Identifier applies to a wireless network. You are not connecting Vonage wirelessly to the router so the SSID has no impact and can not be specified.

"I'm assuming your router gives you the option to set up multiple SSID's, but this is not to control bandwidth usage. This would be so one set of computers (SSID 1) could be on your network and share files with each other, while another set of PC's (SSID 2) could be on the same network and share files with each other but not share with SSID 1 and vise versa.

What you are looking for is QoS not an additional SSID."

In the next post on this thread, bbowden writes:

"Thanks for the clarification. How do I go about setting up the QoS then? My router has that I have seen it in the settings. Thanks."

That brings this follow-up post from brian188:

"Assign the MAC address of your Vonage ATA the highest priority. If you use any pc's for P2P, torrents, or large file up/downloads set them to the lowest. If not leave them unclassified."

Vonage Stock Report

On Friday, Vonage stock closed at $1.85 a share, which is a 10 cent drop (-5.13 %) rise from Thursday's $1.95 a share close.  But then again, today's closing Vonage price was three cents higher than today's closing price, which was $1.82 a share .At the close of today's trading, Vonage shares came out to be 1,368,789 shares.
