Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 25, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

Hey, first of all I see today that we've passed 53 million page views since we first began the Vonage Forum here almost five years ago in March, 2003. Every time you click on a page here at the Vonage Forum that's another page view. Great going, and let's see how quickly we can get to 54 million.

As for today, we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one from a Vonage Forum Member whose callers can't hear him (although he can hear them), and here's another Vonage Forum thread worth talking about, and it concerns connecting to Vonage with a wireless aircard. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

On The Vonage Voip Forum

A new Vonage Forum thread has gone up having the name of, I can hear caller but they can't hear me.

In starting up this thread Vonage Forum Member Danosaurus wrote this first post:

I hope someone can help me...at this point my Vonage is practically unusable. About half the time I can hear the person on the other end just fine, but they can't hear me. One person said they could hear about every third word. This is particularly frustrating when I've been on hold for several minutes waiting to talk to someone only to get hung up on because they can't hear me! I have called Vonage and they couldn't help, and I have also called my ISP. They sent a technician to my apartment and he checked the signal levels which were good. He suggested replacing the modem, which didn't help at all. I have also run the test with the router out of the system with the same results. Here's my tech info:

I am located in West Los Angeles
My ISP is Time Warner Roadrunner
6mb down/512k up
New modem is an Ambit U10CO18
Vonage adapter is PAP2 ver 2
Modem ----> Belkin F5D7230-4 Router ----> Pap 2

After reading through those results, Steve48 responded this way:

"Your jitter seems pretty high. Also, we're having some problems with the forum test that causes your packet loss to be 100%, server to you. Please go to www.testyourvoip.com and run a test call to Boston. Post the detailed results. Then remove the Belkin router. Plug your computer directly into the modem and repeat the test. Post those results as well.:

Danosaurus did just that, as he responded with some new information in his next post:

Here are my results with router:

Looks like I've found the problem? Bad router? Any recommendations on a router that works well with vonage?"

Danosaurus then followed up with this:

Maybe didn't find the problem. While the router was out of the system, I also ran the test at VOIPReview.com and got this:

Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 1406808 bps
Upload speed: 316800 bps

Estimated MOS score: 3.6

ARRRRGH!"

Following up here is fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56 and he writes:

"The latency or pause . . depending on what the test calls it, is most probably your problem. This is usually due to network congestion. Could be local to your neighborhood, in the Road Runner network, or their provider like Level 3."

Connecting to Vonage thru Wireless aircard is the name of a new Vonage Forum thread begun by Vonage Forum Member gregnc.

Hello , and I am considering getting a USB air card from Alltel , BUT want to be able to use Vonage with it , can anyone help with what I might need for this type of setup , or if it can even be done this way ?," asks gregnc in the post he had made to open this thread of his.

An answer comes right away courtesy of fellow Vonage Forum Member butterman, who writes:

"It can be done, but its a complex setup and your call quality will depend on the quality of your wireless connection.

2 main options.

1. Get an EV-DO router. This device will actually allow you to connect your EVDO card to a router to then share internet connection. You could then connect a Vonage device to this router.

2. Turn your PCs network port for Internet connection sharing.

Let me be very honest about these setups, I don't know that I would really recommend either. Both are not so simple and I think using Voip over the cellular internet connection is bound to have QoS problems. I could be wrong on this as I don't have this type of setup, but I would be very cautious before making the plunge in to a very unique setup with Vonage (or any Voip provider)."

Vonage Stock Report
