Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

February 22, 2008

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage Voip Forum Digest.

As for today, we are going to catch up with a way for Vonage accounts to lower your phone bills. Then we are going to go straight to two Vonage Forum threads, one from a user who would like to swap Vonage devices between Vonage accounts, and the other thread we will look at today happens to be about what sounds like DNS-related issues with the router. Then we'll check on Vonage's stock price.

In The News

Leading Personal Finance Magazine, Website Suggests Vonage As A Way To Save Money

Taking note  of the fact that some folks out there are just a bit tight financially these days, the personal finance advice magazine and website Kiplinger's is out with eight tips to "Save Money on Phone, Internet and TV.

One of those tips is entitled "Rethink Your Phone Company."

In that section, Kiplinger writes in part:

"Or consider other low-cost Internet phone services such as Vonage. It comes with more perks such as voice-mail, caller ID and call waiting and costs $25 per month for free unlimited local and long-distance calls."

On The Vonage Voip Forum

Here's a new Vonage Forum thread that happens to have been named, Swapping Vonage Devices between accounts.

To kick off this thread which he has begun, Vonage Forum Member Flexus writes this:

"Hello all, I have 2 accounts with 2 numbers on each. I am not at home so I don't know what devices I have, however, the device on my main number is evidently one of the ones that have caller id problems.

My device on the other account always works. I just want to swap these 2 devices between accounts. In other words, Account A has device A and account B has device B.

I now want account A to have device B and account B to have device A. Account B is secondary and not important that the caller id work. I have tried for months to get them to do something about the caller id and it will work for a few calls and then go back to 50/50 incomplete data or showing the information. The device on account B always works and swapping them is the only answer I can come up with.

Following up with some direct advice for Flexus is the very knowledgeable frequent poster, and that is Vonage Forum Member Darrell_G.

"You can request tech support in the States for what you are trying to do if the language barrier is the problem. If you login to your Vonage web account, you can see where you can transfer a number to another device with an open port," he writes. "This feature is located on the "Add-ons" tab "Move a number." I'm not really sure if you can do this from your Vonage web account because you need an open port on the other device. Vonage tech support should be able to assist you with what you are trying to accomplish."

New Vonage Forum Member Penguin has a new Vonage Forum thread he has started and titled, DynDNS problems with VDV21-V router.

Here's what Penguin writes:

"My router the vdv21-v from Vonage seems not to forward my ports. I'm using dyndns service & dyndns updater so I can run a test server. I forward my ports through the routers configuration page. I used my private IP and start port 80, end port 80 and protocol TCP. The dyndns client still won't work though, but it works if I just type in my private IP address. The problem is for some reason it won't work on my public IP address.

The first time I set up the port forwarding it worked fine and I could use my domain name from dyndns, but since then it hasn't worked. I really need to get this worked out because I develop websites and really heavily on my test server to test sites. I tried the DDNS setup through the router config page and all I get is Unrecognized return code. ()

So I guess my question is why won't the ports open on my public IP address, but will open on my private IP address? Shouldn't the ports open if there open on the private IP address. I would greatly appreciate it if some could shed some light on this for me."

Well, Penguin, I will tell you what. Here comes your fellow Vonage Forum Member ed56, ready to "shed some light," on your issue.

"Most lower end routers do not support IP NAT loopback, which is what you need to access an external IP that points to an internal ip on the LAN," ed56 writes.

"You should be able to access the public address from an external site," ed56 continues. "The way I check it is to terminal service in to one of my servers (off site) and then use the web to check the internal site."
